Can someone tell me when this old Hoover upright was made? Found it at an antique shop today, the bottom of the machine says model 300. I didn't buy it cause they wanted 30 bucks and it's in rough shape....brush roll was seized etc.

That was made between 1935 and 1938, it was Hoovers bargain model. That poor thing doesn't have the original bag or cord so $30 bucks is about silly for that, suppose it depends how bad someone wants it. Those old brushrolls aren't to difficult to unseize.

Thank you for the info! I figured the bag and cord were replaced at some point in its lifetime. There was no way I was paying 30 dollars for that thing it was too far gone. I do feel sorry for it though....

I Agree

I wouldn't pay $30 for it either. However, I would have taken it to the counter, pointed out the defects, and made them an offer. Sometimes they'll let it go for less. As Robert said, it's not too hard to unseize the brushroll, and some Mother's Mag will shine up the base/nozzle real nice. Give it a shot, worst they can do is say no, but at least you tried.
From my own experience, once I found a 903 Electro-Hygiene at a thrift store with a $55 price tag on it. It ran really sweet, but one wheel was broken, the adjust-o-rite cover was missing, the bulb was broken off in the socket, and the cover for the deodorizing chamber was missing. I wheeled it up to the counter, pointed out the defects, and offered them $10 for it. They asked if I could go $15, and I said "SOLD!" I got the adjust-o-rite off ebay with some Electrolux parts that I also needed, bought the deodorizing cover and wheel at a Royal dealer, and still had less in it than the original asking price. Later I was able to pick up a set of attachments and an extra accessories kit for it. Here's a pic.

You've gotta love when a deal comes together!

I was at the flea-market a month or so ago, and froze dead in my tracks when i spotted an ancient Bissell Grand-Rapids sweeper. I walked up and said, after waiting, "How much are you asking for this?"

He told me back, "$15"

I told him back, "$15 is a bit much, would you do $8?"

He stopped in a minute of consideration, He wasn't going to agree on the price.

"That's a little low" or something he said.

"O.K, how about $8.75?"

We both laughed, and he agreed. that quarter i got back was my lucky quarter, before i lost it!
