Viking / Royal Model 133 Upright

Hello Everyone

I came across this recently and decided to try and fix it up. Doesn't look to have been used much at all and from newspaper ads appears to have been sold in 1942 in Canada. There is only one other mention of a model 133 that I can find in the archives but not many details. I took some time to polish off some of the oxidation and it came out beautiful but has a few mechanical issues I need to address to try and get it running smooth.

-Bearing noise: the shaft has a tiny bit of play and when running has some significant bearing noise. It has oil ports in the front and back and I tried adding 6 drops but it didn't seem to help much. I'm pretty sure at least the front bearings need replacement. Can anyone point me in the direction of the part numbers for both bearings and any ideas where I could get some?

-Belt: Needs a new one of course but can't seem to confirm what the PN is for the belt from old posts

-Brushroll: Same thing, needs a new one and there seems to be lots of different part numbers mentioned in old posts - what would be the right one? It has square ends.

I did try to contact the Henry Company but they didn't have any of these parts available - any ideas on where I could get them?

I'm also hoping I can get a hold of a copy of a service manual that would be applicable to this model. If anyone has any leads or could point me in the right direction that would be great.

Its really in beautiful condition so I'd like to get it up and running smoothly again.

That's the coolest royal I've ever seen.
The Henry company is where I got my bearing plate and I believe it was their last ones. They dropped off eBay and I got all my royal parts from them.
The older royals are called oilers. The bearing plate has the bearings built into the bearing plate where the oil port goes I'm also pretty sure there is felt or something In it that absorbs the oil. The bottom motor housing bearing is attached to the other oil port. I believe the back is open and a wavy washer sits on the bottom.
The bearing plate port is riveted on. I'm attaching the bearing plate and oil port seperate. You get small screws to reinstall or rivets if you know how.
The bottom bearings are open so you don't have to replace them.
Be careful of the spacers that are in the motor housing off the bearing plate and field. They have spacers on a couple of the screws. If you lose them or don't install it would be bad.

The royal belts I found on eBay and are knurled Kirby belts. Kirby uprights/eureka power nozzle/royal uprights all take the exact same belt. I'm adding a link to the Kirby non knurled belts which is what I use on my royals they work well.

Your not going to find.
Royal got bought out by TTI. I called Stark vacuum in Oregon or Washington and they threw everything away late nineties. Stark made a private label royal. I actually called and talked to the owner of Henry vacs and the same scenario as stark happened to them.
If Henry vacuum is open they have some royal parts.
The carbon brushes are the same as Kirby's 505-cr1 carbon brushes.

Front Bearing

Thank you for the insight! Yes, its a very unique looking machine and its in such good cosmetic condition I'd really like to get it going.

As for the brushroll, I believe I read somewhere you can't use the ones with dual brush strips on a motor with sleeve bearings - these were only designed to be used on machines with ball bearing motors. Is this accurate?

The front oiler sleeve bearing is the part that's proving difficult to find. I'm not sure a ball bearing can be used in place of a sleeve bearing in the particular motor - I think the plate in the ebay link is for a ball bearing motor? Does anyone have a part number I can use to assist in the search?

I got an answer the brush roll would be skinnier with large caps. I got a part number the said belt but is probably the brush roll.

Henry vacuum company

They have 3 stores still open. One is closing the end of September. If you call the store Dave I believe is the owner of Steve who did online sales (Sunday and Monday are his days off). If you ask if they have a used in good shape older brush roll Is your best bet. I bought one for $15 or so and it was in real good shape.

I did try the Henry Company already and they didn't have either the correct brushroll or the front oiler bearing.

I'll keep digging and see if I can find a part number for the front bearing.

Is the rear bearing and plate. Its called rear bearing because it's behind the fan.
You take your bearing plate drill out the three rivets. You measure the height of the lip of the plate of the part your putting in maybe 1/8-1/4 inch. Then measure depth of bearing plate which is maybe 1/4". The total of those heights mine would be 3/8-1/2. Get 3 metal screws with a flat bottom.
The other option is soak the bearing plate in water for about a day. If you have an air compressor blow either through the oiler port or inside of bearing plate where there is a small opening. This will clean the bearings. Let it dry. Then in the oiler port add 5 drops of 3 in 1 oil. Then put bearing plate on the the armature but don't install it. The reason you put it on is to spin armature in both directions. Add 3-5 drops until it spins really good.
The bearing plate bearing has the bearings and felt to absorb the oil.
There is a way to rebristle your brush roll. Get horse hair. You would cut the old bristles away. If your bristle desired length is 3/4"" cut horse hair into 1.5". You fold the horse hair in half and install in the bristle channel. The old bristles probably had staples you can loop it through those and push staple back down to hold bristles in place.
You now have instructions on how to completely restore your vacuum.

So I opened up the machine yesterday - a little cumbersome since the head and the fan case are all one unit. In any event, took everything apart to get a closer look at the bearings. Attached are some pictures. I was able to extract the pressed sleeve bearing on the front of the machine fairly easily (so the one on the front of the machine is the rear bearing?). You can see its just a simple $3 bronze bearing.


As such, I'm going to try and find a compatible bronze sleeve bearing and just replace that rather than the whole unit. The bearing at the rear of the machine is good, its just the one on the front of the machine that has too much play.

Rest of the machine including armature and field all looked excellent. Did notice some uneven brush wear but I think this is related to the bearing play.

The bearing plate is not like my 235 at all. This would explain everything. I'm glad you were able to get it fixed.
Did I mention that's the sweetest royal I've ever seen.
The model plate is pretty cool it mentions amps. Up through the 880 royal put watts instead of amps.
