Numatic is proof that it CAN be done. I happen to know that the the factory workers are very well paid - you probably wouldn't even be able to guess what the hourly rate was based on the fact that producing cleaners here on minimum wage costs so much more than it would abroad.

People keep saying "products are made in China because of cheap labour, which means the price is cheap" but it's absolute rubbish and a complete con. You CAN buy good value British/ German, American and, well, western built products, and they are often much better built. You are supporting a more local economy.

I am glad to see Numatic Henrys are the most popular cylinder vacuum cleaner in the UK. Yes, they aren't much cop at carpet cleaning, but as more and more people in Europe have hard flooring, the numatic is perfect for that. Excellent British allergy foundation approved filtration, good quality inexpensive bags and machines that last decades all for around £100.

That is true though, this does make things cheaper. Numatic as a company have simply decided to make far less profit. They'd make heaps more if they went abroad. Fact is, the don't want to.

Oli, I've got one of the new Henry's with the Wessel Werk floortool. It's a HUGE improvement on the old one and brings carpet pick up to the same level as a straight suction Miele.


 


And of course, there is the Henry Xtra which now comes with 3 floortools, Miele Solution style - hard floor tool, turbo brush and standard floor tool. A good option for large houses with lots of floor types.

I agree and disagree with that Chris, indeed the newer floor tool seems to perform better that the old one, it is much korr difficult to move across the carpet as it is lacking the metal base plate.

They wouldn't make "heaps" more though. You have to remember shipping costs and rising wages in China are making things much less attractive to produce over there. Because of the business model numatic have, and they mentioned this in one of their videos, that they have such a wide variety of products, mainly commercial, that they can make products customised, build them and ship them to the customer much quicker than if they were made in Asia.

Having a look at Numatic's Accounts on Companies House, they made over £9 million in profit last year, intend to increase factory space and launch more products in 2016/17. To me it would seem that they have formula that works well for them, which as has been said in this thread, just goes to show that you can manufacture products in the UK/Europe that are profitable yet are at a relatively low cost to the customer.

Believe me, that £9million could be way higher if Numatic wanted to go abroad. I repeat what I said earlier - that they don't want to. All credit to Numatic for what they are doing.

Of course, they can always make more, it pales in comparison to Dyson's profit, and I agree they should be given credit. Perhaps a Royal charter

That is probably true as well, regarding Numatic working on a tighter profit margin, but they like it. It is a private company so no shareholders to please, lets hope it stays that way.

They are3 more interested in build a quality product for consumers, and at the end of the day, £9 million in profit is nothing to snuff at. Their model works for them.

Shame there are not many more company's like this. Quality comes before profits which is how it should be. SEBO follow a similar model I assume.

GoVacuum sells them, as well as some sellers on Amazon. They aren't as cheap/as good a value here as they are in the UK I'm guessing due to import costs. But they're still amazing little machines.

Great to see this, really enjoyed the video.
It's heart-warming that a company is still prepared to make a very good profit in Britain & feels no need to move production abroad in pursuit of perhaps higher returns. It's a pity more companies don't feel this way.
Every time another Numatic lands in our house it's nice to know that a British company made the little chap in Britain.
