verilux vacuum

Wondering if anyone has seen or used this vacuum. It's an interesting idea. My main issue with it is that it's bagless. It's a vacuum that includes a powerhead with an ultraviolet light so it kills germs while you vacuum. It's interesting that other manufacturers have not come out with a vacuum attachment that does this. If anyone has tried this vacuum, would love to know what you think.

It's been done

There was an upright called the Halo, which was bought by Oreck, that used a UV lamp on the underside of the machine.

And if i recall correctly it was said to be ineffective because the carpet was not exposed the UV light for a long enough period to kill the organisms

If i felt the need to sanitize my carpet I'd use my Hanmi steamer with the carpet glide tool, after a good thorough vacuuming. I don't think it's 100% effective either but I think it would be more effective than a momentary flash of UV light.

I like to use my Regina steamer plus for carpet sanitation after a good vacuuming. I wouldn't say it could replace carpet shampooing but it could be a great add on to sanitizing a carpet.

I saw a bagged upright the other day that looks similar to the Halo/Oreck the "Soniclean VT" Very similar action/design. However the link to the original one you give, N0xxy suggests a machine you use "after you have vacuumed." I can't see many owners doing that, to be frank.

The only thing it would be good for is giving the germs a sun tan. I think this 'sanitizing' vacuum is a stupid idea, playing into people's irrational fears of 'germs'. People need to get over this whole 'sanitizing' thing - as the world's foremost vacuum collector (Stan Kann) once said "no one ever died from the dust coming out of the Hoover bag".

Doubtful of UV claims


Apparently, if it did have a strong enough uv light to kill germs you should be concerned about it damaging plastic and rubber items in your home. And you may need to worry about O2 production.

I doubt it's powerful enough to work.

Soniclean

The sonicclean uses a vibrating bar which helps it beat the carpet, not a UV light

Ah, thanks for correcting me. I like the shape of that Soniclean. I think the blue light tricked me into thinking it was a UV vacuum.

I believe that the UV light on the Halo vacuums, is only 2 or 3 inches long, so it doesn't really sanitize the whole carpet...

Not that it sanitizes anyway, cause you'd have keep the vacuum on the same part of the carpet for at least a minute, which would damage the carpet...

ultraviolet light and other design flaws with the verilux

I actually have a few germicidal bulbs that you can put in a regular lamp socket. They do create a bit of ozone, which can remove odors. Actually a friend of mine thinks they look kind of pretty, kind of like black lights, but I've told her it's probably not a good idea to look at them. Another thing about this vacuum, unless I miscounted, it uses 4 filters. That's a lot to maintain. Apparently if the power head stays in one place for more than 5 seconds, it turns off the ultraviolet light. Also, only the floor power nozzle has the light, if you use the other accessories, you don't have the germicidal feature, at that point, it's like any other vacuum. Seems kind of expensive for what you get with it.
