I picked up a lot of info from just listening to attendees.

General Conclusions:
1) owners are starting to have more stores, as well as larger and more diversified stores.
2) no longer just a vac shop, they are becoming vacuum and sewing shops, vacuum, small appliance/ power tool repair shops, cleaning solutions and home environment shops
3) Shop owners are making their stores look like retail stores that sell vacuum cleaners, rather than a vac shop, and paying attention to sound, proven merchandising principles.
4) Unless it is an established shop with no competition, and not enough population to support a second shop, the one shop owner is becoming increasingly rare, but still needs to expand into home heaters, cleaning supplies, etc, to create more revenue streams.

Manufacturers are starting to guard and 'patrol' MAP and MIP pricing.

There are plenty of opportunities to sell brands that are not big box and will not be.

Soniclean is a new offering in the lightweight category using an oscillating plastic bar to beat the carpet (powered by separate motor) First thought was it was a rehash of the Vibra-Beat, but it isn't. That was flexible rods with rolling tubular beads strung on it, the Sonic is a solid pad that seems to do a more effective job of agitation. It sucks down HARD on thick carpet and is hard to push. The engineer/company owner used to work for Oreck.

@trebor . . .

Hi,

Thanks for the VDTA convention info. I have been entertaining ideas of attempting to do online/virtual sales of vacuums that I deemed decent items that could be sold at reasonable prices re product and shipping. However, there don't seem to be many avenues for so singular a purpose these days as you've also mentioned. All may not be lost though, I've taken quite a fancy to the induction cooker too. It's a very useful device that's quite often pushed more for what the market will bear than its virtues.

I just bought one at a nice price but found the exact same brand and model being sold for approximately a hundred dollars more elsewhere. Totally unnecessary.

After reading your mention of the Filtro-Pur, I had to go have a look. I started looking around and found both it and the Soniclean -- two machines I'd never seen or heard of before. Both are a little out there I think. Especially the Filtro-Pur at the $1,900 I understand the asking price to be. Wow!

First look at the Sonic, I thought I was seeing a rehash of the Halo and -- because of the design -- I had no doubt the designer must have worked for Oreck. I found the makers, the AVAC Corporation, don't let you browse their web site until you've registered with them and made contact to validate an account.

Huh...

The soniclean does look a lot like the halo. hmm the beater pad seem kind of unneeded as a well designed brushroll can produce enough vibration. It sounds like it would be fairly durable given the materials it's made with though
