value and repair of vacuum cleaners

Barb here.  Scott's green Hoover and rasberry Hoovers were damaged in shipment along with the canned ham we got from Marc.  Does anyone have an idea of the value of these vacuum cleaners and what the cost would be to repair the scratches and rub spots on them?  I can post photos of the damage if need be.  There are photos of them under the convention thread.  The shipping place needs the information to file a claim.  They did not pack them well at all.  Thanks for your help.  Barb

were any of the hoods on the convertibles damaged barb? if so that increases repair value. if just scratched not so much. if any plastic parts are broken, id file a $150 claim for each vac, if just scratched paint $50

It all depends. My aunt bought here green 707 in 1976. It was on sale for $65.00 My Deluxe 1076 was on clearance for $59.00 (63.00 with tax).Was originally $84.00 in 1975, of any of this helps. Having them repainted by an auto body shop will cost. Please post some pics. Are they remorseful? What do they have to say about poorly packing? Wishing you luck,

Surely touch up paint is available to hide or at least flush the scratches?

But,

for that cleaner, and others like it to have survived in such good condition for SO LONG...........and, to be damaged in a BOX, not under a bed, radiator, etc. THAT'S the point.

True John, it is the moral issue here.

A vintage Vacuum Cleaner getting damaged in use is bad enough, but acceptable, it happens, but in a box, COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE.

If that happened to a vintage vacuum of mine there would be hell to pay. My cleaners are my children, NOBODY damages them, least of all delivery companies.

china dishes, crystal, whatever. The point is: you pay pros to pack your stuff! I could break/damage my things free of charge. Not to worry, though. Barb is just the one to tackle this project. They'll be sorry. They'll also never pack anything this way again.

throw salt in an old wound but....moving companies and shipping companies go on market value and mostly those are items that can be replaced. Vintage stuff (and it doesn't matter if it's typewrites, vacuums or stereos), have a harder hill to climb in proving value.

It would be better for you if they had completely damaged the units and they had been agreeable to look at ebay prices etc for market replacement value. Trying to claim on partial damages like nicks & dents in an otherwise sound vacuum, will be tough.

They would only consider a partial damages claim because of customer relations-nothing more. I deal with shipping companies all the time and the gorillas therein. It's a snake pit of wording and regulations when it comes to claims. The first thing they do and are instructed to do is; STALL...then deny, deny and DENY.  Unless they packed it themselves, shipping  companies will always default to the old ruse that you didn't pack adequately. Moving companies OTOH who packed the stuff for you, will default to 'value'. In other words, you are going to have to prove what it will cost to repair the damages.  That can get sticky with vintage vacuums....
