Hi , I was just wondering, if we can have a live chat place on VL? that would be so cool! and also tells us who's online in our contact list :D
Video calls would also be cool!
Anybody agree? :d becaus eit certainly would make me visit VL more, because FB also has this

I supposed this board has to strike a balance between 'Nice country pub where we all gather and chat around the fire with a tankard of ale or massive glass of brandy', and full blown forum ala Pistonheads, XDA-dev etc.

On balance, I prefer the pub. We've just had a new jukebox, new carpet and fresh wallpaper, but it's still there.

I'll hush up about new ideas for now and enjoy the peace

It would be interesting..

To have a feature that tells VL upgraded members who is online, But as for live chat, I don't think that would serve much use. If someone wanted to video chat, they'd have your skype or facebook-whatever modern doo-hickey you people use now-a-days.

Say upgraded member MR.SAMPLE looked into the "Who's online" feature (A name can be determined later, if ever), and saw that MR.INSERTNAMEHERE was online-They could use "Message system 2.0", to commence in conversation about Dial-a-naps or upholstery nozzles, or who-knows-what. the only difference between the current messaging system and "Messaging system 2.0", Is that "Messaging system 2.0" rings or makes a vacuum noise of sorts when a new message is received- instantly notifying said online Vacuumlander. they would see/hear the new message, and look into the message/mail area, where a "chat-room" scenario of sorts could then be engaged.

Again, simply ideas, It won't be the end of the world if the above does not make it, or even comes close.

(If Hoover stopped making type C bags tomorrow, that would be a different story...

Personally believe

That this forum is pretty much perfect the way it is.

If anyone feels the need to video chat/real time chat then theres Skype.

Why waste Robert and Freds time when there are other programmes/sites offering the same.

I also dont believe the 'pageing' of the threads is needed either due to the fact theres a Down to bottom button and upgraded members can return to where they last read a thread very quickly.

Not to mention most of us have PC's that can cope with the pictures loading to spoil the one page of info would be a great shame where we can scroll back to find posts referenced in later posts very quickly and easily wihthout having to go back thru page upon page looking fruitlessly.

I think the chat feature, it would be cool if it looked like the facebook side bar telling you who's online when you click on their name a chat box comes up in the bottom right hand corner like facebook, like I said it is a good idea

Thanks for the input guys. I'm not sure everyone would agree about wanting a "user is now online" indicator.

Some might think of this as a privacy violation, I suspect many would actually. It would have to be a balance and not everyone wants to have to immediately answer an email message as if its a text message.

I'm open to listening to everyone's thoughts on this as that online feature wouldn't be hard to implement, but I'm not sure about it.

Hi Sam,

The problem with creating an "Official" vacuumland Facebook page would be that it could, potentially, make the forum a bit redundant and we all like it here.

Plus, with Facebook, it would be far too easy for any disputes or disagreements to get out of hand and even get incredibly personal. Not everyone on VL are friends.

There are a few vacuum related FB groups up and running, but these are more created by groups of friends that all socialise outside of VL. Add a few of us on FB and get chatting with folk. No doubt someone will invite you to a meet up at some point and you'll get to meet us all in the real world :).

well for those who are not keen on the feature surely there can be a way of appearing offline

That's very true Michael, but that turns a relatively simple task into a huge task. Not that I mind doing the work, but only if there is enough call for it which I don't sense as of yet.

I suspect their might be a bit of a generation gap here, with exceptions of course, the older members won't want this and the younger generation most likely will want this.

For me personally I would keep that turned off, the last thing I need is more interruptions in my day, but I'm old lol :-)
