Hi all,

Back in my childhood (early/mid 60's) I have vague memories of having seen a machine in a second-hand shop window which seemed to be a vacuum cleaner and a polisher. I can't remember the brand. It would have been the size and colourings of a Hoover 61 (612 here in Oz). I only have this feeling because it had a bag on it and the words "cleaner" and "polisher" on it somewhere.

I know this is next-to-nothing to go on, but does anybody have any idea what I might have been looking at?

Cheers,

Nick

Vac Polishing Attachments:

Also, here in the States, both Electrolux and Compact made air-driven polishing attachments. The Compact version was called the Polish-Aire. You put the hose into the exhaust port, hooked the Polish-Aire up to the hose, and you were ready to scrub and polish floors (the Lux version was also capable of scrubbing carpets). RPM's were kind of on the slow side, though - never a good thing when you're trying to buff paste wax on a floor.

I think I may have one of the machines you are referring to. Mine is a bit older (1950) but they probably continued the idea for a while. It was made by Fillery. Basically it looked like a standard upright vacuum cleaner but when you turned it over there was a place for attaching two circular brushes. A lever on the back switched it over from clean to polish. moving it to polish brings down the polishing brushes and engauges their drive.

Doug, that is a very interesting looking machine. What a great idea. Thanks for sharing the picture with us. Do you use this machine?

Recalling the 'Dingdang Flamndoozle'

The Fillery Vacuum Polisher I found is the same colours as Doug's but has no mechanism for disengaging the brushes and the bag attaches in the back like a Hoover. Sadly mine has no bag and I have yet to find the maroon generic sateen bag I know I have hidden away somewhere that I intend to fit to it.

VCCC Members to the rescue again!

Hi everyone,

Thanks for all the feedback.

Tommy: your link was very informative. It was fascinating to see under that Hoover and understand how it works.

Doug (and Dave): I think you're on the money. The word "Fillery" is stirring vague memories. It was a totally unknown brand to me (compared with Hoover). My recollection is it had a bag at the rear, but it may well have been at the side. Any chance of a front-on view, Doug?

Does anybody else know anything about the Fillery range, or have other examples of their machines?

Cheers,

Nick
