Using bleach in a carpet cleaner

Has anyone done this? My bestest friend uses bleach for everything but wood, she used it for stains on her beige carpet, it got rid of the stains.

Ouch! Bleach does not ACTUALLY clean. It is a strong oxidizer, bleaching away stains til they disappear. It will ruin the seals in your carpet cleaning machine and should be used with great caution. I don't recommend it at all for carpet cleaning.

The stains are still there, but they're just a different colour, it's like people turning their hair white with peroxide bleaches, or making a limed-up toilet bowl look "clean" by bleaching the lime white, and even with that Retr0bright formula, you use oxy-bleach to bleach the yellowness out of plastics so, it's more of a mask than anything, it's just that people are so used to using it as a cleaner that they won't use anything else...

I wouldn't use bleach in anything but the washing machine (to clean it out if it goes a bit smelly) or in the bucket of water to wash the floors myself...

That said, UK thick bleach does contain detergent to help 'clean' surfaces too. It is just that UK advertising is now aimed at telling people that bleach doesn't clean in the way that they thought it did. And despite what they say on TV about bleach whitening limescale, I have never known it do this. When it comes to bleachihng out stains, say from a working surface, mostly that's all people want, to know the surface is disinfected and the dark patch gone.

To return to the original topic though, surely bleach will take the colour out of a natural fibre carpet? Unless US bleach is different from ours? (Who remembers Oxi-bleach?)

I'm sure it took out the "beige", too. I only use bleach in the washer for whites and in the toilets. I worked in a nursing home while I was in college. Bleach was used everywhere. Our U,S, bleach is thin like water. WE don't have "thick" bleach at all. THat CAN'T be good for the machine, either.

We also have thin bleach in the UK, it's just people buy thick stuff thinking it's better, you just have to buy the store's own-brand budget stuff, cos that's thin and scent free (assuming you don't class chlorine gas as a scent!!)...

Thick bleach is bought because it clings to surfaces. Like toilet bowls. For that reason, it is better on those jobs. And as i said already, most thick bleach has detergent built in. So it cleans too. Thin bleach and bleach tablets are great for diluting and washing-down areas which need to be sanitised. It's also incredibly cheap. It is no good for cleaning as it has no cleaning power, nor can it be used where the bleach needs to adhere to the surfaces.

excellent point again, 2 in one day LOL quite a roll.

Have used bleach detergent sprays (domestos) for removing tea and coffee stains from synthetic carpets in the past and it works quite well although I did test an inconspicuous area first.

In my old house I had white woolen carpets and before I moved out I also used Flash with bleach to remove an old cocoa stain from a bedroom carpet. Worked a treat!

Worst thing anyone could use is washing up liquid. That stuff just never rinses out of a carpet, and detergent residue means dirt sticks and sticks well. If used responsibly I think bleach could be used on certain carpets but as mentioned above thin bleach does not clean at all. Just merely sanitises and bleaches out stains.

Thick bleach certainly is the way to go down toilets sinks and cleaning. Thin bleach only really is of use to soak laundry in to whiten it but it must be washed in detergent before and rinsed before addition of bleach or to use as a germ killer where a surface has been washed with detergent first.

and yes Oxi Bleach, I used that for a while about 10 years ago. Never really got on with it as it didnt seem to work just as well as Domestos or own label thick bleaches.

What I have noticed is that most toilet clenaers including toilet duck and the likes dont actually work as well as thick bleach down the toilet. I usually dont buy them for that reason unless I have guests due to the perfume content in them.

We never use bleach for anything other than getting rid of germs and that sort of thing, so I just buy the Tesco Value thin bleach at 29p!

Another great Tesco Value cleaning product is the Value Disinfectant at 31p.

It didnt discolor the carpet, made it smell fresh and clean looking, unlike hoover's shitty detergent.
