YES YOU CAN!!
Yes, you can use an Electrolux upright hose on the Z86,88,89 versions. I have adapted one and it works fine. The one that I adapted is the one that has the plastic hose machine end, not the metal end. What I did was remove the metal/silver collar on the old machine end, this gave me access to the old hose. I gently slit the old hose, and pulled it off the end. You will now have the machine end with a three inch or so male end. Now, this end is a little narrower than the machine end on a powered lux upright hose. (depending on which upright hose you have, the one I used, I had to slide the rubber end off, exposing a hard plastic sleeve, the newer ones appear to be one solid plastic piece, in which case you might have to cut a couple of inches off the end) I took some electrical tape and made three or four?? wrappings around the machine end, took the upright hose and slid it over the taped end. So far it has been holding up and has not pulled off. I guess only time will tell. I just insert the pigtail into the power socket and away you go! I did have to trim the pigtail a bit for it to fit into the power socket, I don't think the pigtail male pin ends are the same diameter as the vac's electrical socket, as I have to tip the pigtail ever so slightly to make contact.
On the older metal ends, on one hose, we removed the old hose, cut a 1.25 inch extension pie, inserted it into the metal end,( had to do some glueing) and then shoved a 1.25 inch generic fitall hose onto it and plugged a pigtail in.
Hope this helps
