Upright .vs. Upright

You knew this thread was comming! So what do you think is the best vintage upright and or your favorite? It needs to be from 1920's to 1980's, you can name brands or particular models, and you can have more then one. My picks are for best carpet cleaner is any vibra groomer two upright and my favorates for various reasons are whirlpool CVR's even though I dont have any, regina 1920's uprights , regina brush n beats again dont have any, and finally any singer upright even if they have been rebranded. So what are yours?

I say F&G Eurekas plus the early 80's plastic decade-80 motor Convertibles.

Hoover

My favorites are Hoover Convertible (I am partial to model 69) and most any Kirby 500 series, but partial to 561. Those are my favorites because those models are what stimulated my life long love of vacs.

As to best cleaning, I have only recently been acquainted with Eureka F&G from that same time frame and I have to say it is a pretty awesome cleaner. It's not that I don't think the Convertible is a contender for best cleaner, but the bottom fill bag was a drawback to what could have been the best cleaner.

I am pretty fond of my Panasonic 6255, but I think that was 89 so getting pretty new there and my Concept 1 really beats the rug up good. Had one Kirby I liked, first with the paper bag inside, can't remember the model.

My choices are the metal-based Convertibles(I'm partial to the 1020) and also The Concept One and Concept Two machines. Those are my pick for deep cleaning

My best carpet groomers

My M Wards,Eureka 6.5 F+G is a great carpet groomer, It always needs a new belt,I don't use it a lot so that leaves a flat spot in the round belt, My Hoover Elite also does a great job,but it does have a 12 amp motor from a twin chamber bagless,Also my Kirby Dual 80,My favorite vacuum at the moment.

Id have to say any Kirby 500 Series, Dual 50 or 80, Classic or Heritage model,rebuilt with a 4 row brush roll,brand new belt,and Mini Emptor, with a G Series Hepa bag conversion.

when we had to replace our Heritage 1hd brush roll i used a 4 row, and an awesome vac became awesomer

same for my royals, replaced worn out 2 rows, with 4 rows with stiffners and WOW

vintage 60s with beater brush rolls are great at cleaning, hoover or eureka. dont like that bottom fill bag on the hoover as stated above

My Upright Choices !

I agree with Sam in saying any metal base Hoover Convertibles. Nothing "Beats" them ! Dependable, durable and well-performing on mostly all carpets. We also have a couple of Kirbys that are great performers too. I like our Kirby Classic CR1 because of the large head. Jill's favorite would be her Kirby Generation 5 because of the self-propelling tech drive. Kirbys are usually our daily drivers, but the Hoover Convertibles are fun and bring back great memories. I grew up with Mom's model 66 ! Grandma's Hoover model 63 and her upstairs vacuum was a Hoover model 29.

For me-Kirbys are the first pick-next metal Royals,then metal based Convertibles.Hate the plastic ones.Others would be Sanitaire.In general don't really like clean air uprights.They are better than direct air if you you their hose and handtools a lot.

My favourite vintage uprights: The Eureka Automatic 260 (the one I grew up with), and the Eureka Vanguard/Rugulator/Dial-a-Naps in the 2000 series. Classic Eureka quality and cool modern design. Not to mention the best dust bag ever: the top-fill F&G!!!!

It's such a shame that the Eureka name has to hide behind the word Sanitaire now. It's also a shame that this fantastic Eureka upright design seems to have been sold to every upright maker on the planet - including Oreck (sniffle, sniffle...boohoo)

I would have to say that my top pick would be any 500 series Kirby. I've read the old CR articles on the forum and they consistently rate Kirby as a poor performer. I can only guess that it is because of the two row brush roll with softer bristles. I've been using the new 4 row brush rolls on mine, and I would say they are superior performers. Plus, a Kirby can be easily converted to a canister, cut your hair, unclog your drains, and polish the silver! And I'm sure some industrious farmer's wife figured out how to use her Kirby to milk the cows and churn butter too! My second favorite upright is Royal. Models with the brush stiffeners are stellar performers. They are nimble, maneuverable, and powerful. My third favorite upright would be Eureka. The earlier models with less powerful motors than today seemed to provide just the right balance of power and cleaning ability. I think the only drawback of Eureka uprights (and Hoover Convertibles) is the round belt.
