I've been using vacuflo model 26 for the last 8 years and have always wished it had more power. Just today called one outfit and they told me that it is possible to install a much stronger motor on it with some modification to the top lid. They quoted me a price of $269 but of course did not want to share the motor number. I would like to try and find something used if I could for hopefully around $100 -150 range, but significantly more power than the original 115334 motor. would appreciate any advice.

Your vacuflo used a 7.2" tangential discharge 2 stage motor like in picture one. He must be talking about a 3 stage 7.2" tangential discharge part #116103-00, picture 2. These motors are a lot more money than the 2 stage. Because of the extra height, this is why he mentioned about modifying the top cover. The exhaust port would be in the same location, just higher up. The 3 screws that mount the motor would have to be longer, and maybe spacers added to keep from crushing the fan cover when tightening those screws.

I bet, if anything, they were going to use one of the high-performance two stage motors from the newer Vacuflo units. Either a 117549-12 (like the 560 and 960 had) or a 119792-07 (used in the current 566Q models). Either one would be a big performance upgrade, though the latter one is the best.
In both cases, the exhaust horn is in the same place as the fan housing is the same size, but the armature and field are taller. This means either cut a hole in the top cover, or just leave it off (not recommended for safety reasons, but would work). The exhaust pipe would basically be the only thing holding the motor in place at this point, as the sandwiching effect of the lid would be gone no matter if you cut a hole in it or just left it off.

I think your best bet would be to try and find a used Vacuflo 560 or 566Q unit (the whole thing), which would turn up from time to time in Portland on eBay or Craigslist (there's tons of Vacuflos in your area, thanks to Gary Phillips!). Better than trying to hack a different motor into your unit. I've done things like that and I felt dirty afterward. LOL
