I just picked this up at a garage sale for $2 but I have no idea what it is. There is no name other than the "House Maid" on the bag. The tag has no patent numbers either and no makers name. The front has a emblem that look familiar? Any ideas? It works perfectly, I just cleaned it up and installed a new brush bar belt. (and cleaned out the 50 year old dirt from the bag)

Looks

a lot like a Premier Pic-Up/GE AV series or even a Kenmore from the 30's or 40's. Does it even specify where it was made? Neat machine!

Unkown

The only reference to where it was made is on the tag showing "Made in the USA". No other names or marks except the technical data shown. That Ausi ad is really cool, I wonder if it is the same company? To bad there isn't a pic. The Wards shield is kind of what I was thinking at first but I can't imagine Wards not plastering thier name all over the machine. Very interesting, thanks for the replies folks gives me a few more directions to start searching. ;)

And Department Store special it is, yay Kenkart! I wonder where Spiegels got that shield-logo from!

It's a Cadillac. Made by Clements. House Maid was a private label for Clements, as was CoOp. In 1950, Consumer Reports mentioned that there was no need to spend the extra $20 to buy the upright as the "Cadillac" (no connection with the automobile), but you would be wise to spend $20 LESS and buy it as a House Maid (or save another $10 and buy it as a CoOp - but only if you were a member of a CoOp store). Cadillac (Clements Manufacturing) was a huge proponent of the 2 speed motor - their tank cleaner was the first 2 speed tank cleaner on the market. Clements tank cleaners also were private labeled as Firestone and Admiral.
