I'm new to Kirby ownership, but have had them cross my path many times. My rebuilt Diamond G has opened new worlds of cleaning unknown to me before. I fully understand why a Kirby needs two speeds, using the high speed on rugs whould likely cause much damage as the suction litterly pulled the fibers of the carpet out. But, I don't understand why Hoover, etal, feels it needs two speeds. Couldn't it beat, sweep and clean better (more like a Kirby) if it just ran on high speed? Talk amongst yourselves.

I usually use my 2-Speed cleaners in Lo, and save the Hi speed for exceptionally dirty areas. The Low setting on your Diamond G is actually a Delicate setting, for, as you said above, delicate rugs. Your Kirby is technically a 4-Speed, as the vacuum switches speeds in hose mode, too!

2 Speed..

Uprights were originally designed to increase suction when using the attachments, the Hoover convertible 65 was the first then the D-50 Kirby, but back in the 30s there were several 2 speed machines made...Cadillac,GE and Eureka come to mind although there were others, they were designed to clean throw rugs and for gentle cleaning.

2 speed

is a neat feature on older machines. I rarely use speed 2 on either of my Hoover Concept Ones, but if I really want to deep-clean the carpets, it's full speed ahead!
