Hi Vacuumlanders,

Long time lurker, first time posting. I hope this is all right.

I currently have a Miele C2 Quartz, and it's been great to me over the years. However, it's only straight suction, and the turbo nozzle isn't really cutting it on some of the carpets.

I want to switch up to a power nozzle (and finally have an excuse for a shiny new vacuum), but I'm having a hard time deciding on either a C3 or C2 Topaz, or a Lux Guardian Platinum. Alas, I can only choose one. I really like Miele, but the Aerus has always been on my mind. The local Aerus store is always closed when I have time, so I haven't been able to try it out yet. Hopefully that'll change later this month.

So here's where I ask: What do you think is the better choice? And for the Platinum, what's a reasonable price?

I'm biased in favor of the Aerus Platinum if you can afford it. It's usually expensive but the price ranges are pretty different depending on who you talk to. The biggest reason I would prefer the Platinum is because it has longer cord, longer hose, and bigger attachments. As far as I know, Miele is sticking with the short hoses, which I find annoying. I could live with a 20 foot cord (after all, I own a Kirby which has a super short cord), but the short hose is no good for me as I hate that. The technological wizardry present on the Platinum is enough to make one's head spin (auto shut off when bag is full, auto suction adjustment, auto brush roll, electronic motor start, computer control board, LED lights, variable speed motor, circuit breakers, etc.). It does give one pause on what kind of reliability it will have. The double HEPA filtration is an excellent feature though and provides the very highest filtration available on a portable unit.

Bottom line, they are both good vacuums that are FAR beyond anything Walmart, etc. sells. Like I said, Miele is good, but if you dislike short hoses/cords you might be disappointed.

I own both, if you don't like the Miele tools I would choose the aerus. If you don't mind the Miele tools then I would look at the most expensive Miele as it's comparable to price of the platinum. I did have an issue with my platinum, the PN would not work and the machine smelled like it was burning. It was a bad board and they send the hose out to the factory to replace a board in it as well apparently. The board they put in failed immediately, the machine would kick itself up to high if I set it to medium and would not shut off. Thankfully they carry a long warranty, , I don't care about reliability though, I want what I want and if it breaks I fix it. I do love my Miele s8 uniq, i find the PN much better than the annoying sound of the aerus pn. I never understood why they didn't add some kind of insulation to the PN, with such a quiet and extremely powerful main unit it overshadowed by the loud nozzle. My tristar with the same PN motor as my platinum yet it's incredibly quiet but I attest that to the metal housing.

Sorry to drone on but if you loved your Miele go for the top of the line, but try and find time to look at the aerus, it's a equally good machine as well.

think i would go with the miele

If you are happy with the Miele you have, you could always get the Volt power nozzle and turn that canister in to a tandom air cleaner, that would probably give you the best cleaning performance. I think out of those two choices, I would go for the Miele, it will be slightly cheaper, the Aerus Guardian Platinum is quite expensive, and I'm not a fan of all the electronics on the platinum, it's just more components that can fail. I don't need my vacuum to also be a computer. Also the hose end on the platinum is very nonstandard, though I think there is an adapter for that. I'm not a fan of nonstandard hose ends because they limit the attachments you can use.

I would probably go for a Lux over a Miele, mainly because they just seem more solidly built. Bags are far cheaper and more readily available, too. And, the warranty is very good. If taken care of, Luxes last forever!

Thanks for the replies! I'll definitely be stopping by the local Aerus store soon to try out the Platinum. Depending on how well it performs and the price, I may have to pull the trigger. Worst case scenario, there's a Miele dealer a short drive away.

I'm also surprised that Aerus never added a metal housing to the Platinum's PN to match the unit's body. The TriStar has one, so I wouldn't expect it to be much extra. I actually thought of using a TriStar PN down the road, because I like the look of it more - it's easy to see where the Lux design ends and the Aerus design starts. :)[this post was last edited: 2/3/2017-20:24]

I haven't had a chance to visit the Aerus store because of time differences, but I may end up waiting until the new Wonder is out with the Tandem Air nozzle before I buy anything for myself.

That said, I should have something nice and shiny to show off next month. :)
