TriStar CXL Restoration

So I have finally come across an older TriStar. I knew the main power unit had some issues before I bought it, but I only paid $5 for it. There weren't any of the smaller attachments, but the wands, hose, and power nozzle are in excellent condition

There are a few scuffs and there was some hear around the brush roll, but there wasn't any accumulation of dirt or lint inside of it.

Main Unit

The outside of the main unit isn't in quite as good of condition, but it's not terrible. (I took these pictures post surgery!)

Here is where things go south. The inside of the main unit appears to be water damaged.

The unit powered on, but sounded quite unhealthy. The fan housing had some rust on the outside of it, but the inside is clean. However, the motor doesn't want to spin freely. I'm assuming that the bearing is shot. Where can I get a suitable replacement motor and how much should I expect to pay for it? Also, can the corrosion damage inside of the machine be cleaned up?

Hi Cameron!


 


You can easily replace the motor for approx. $40 complete with brushes. It's really not worth spending the time playing with the old one. And besides, you can replace the motor yourself in minutes. Save the old gaskets and motor seals and wash them in Dawn Dishwashing detergent.  


 


You can replace the motor with a high efficiency model but those tend not to last as long. The $40 one is just fine. Unless that is, yours has the higher efficiency motor in it already. You will know by the amps or wattage. The high efficiency motors cost a little over $100. You can also find Krylon spray paint in aluminum color and re-spray the fan housing . That's if you plan on repairing the existing motor. I know the bearings can be difficult to replace.

TriStar timeline

Yours is from 1982-85; the TriStar PN is about 1984-85.

My parents bought the red CXL back in 1985 & I still have it to this day.
