You can easily replace the motor for approx. $40 complete with brushes. It's really not worth spending the time playing with the old one. And besides, you can replace the motor yourself in minutes. Save the old gaskets and motor seals and wash them in Dawn Dishwashing detergent.
You can replace the motor with a high efficiency model but those tend not to last as long. The $40 one is just fine. Unless that is, yours has the higher efficiency motor in it already. You will know by the amps or wattage. The high efficiency motors cost a little over $100. You can also find Krylon spray paint in aluminum color and re-spray the fan housing . That's if you plan on repairing the existing motor. I know the bearings can be difficult to replace.
