Today's thrift store find...A Canadian Hoover 118!

I stopped at a thrift shop on my way home today, and found this darling little Hoover! It made a horrible racket when plugged in at the shop; I removed a magnet and a finishing nail from the beater bar chamber, and now its just fine!

The bag appears to be a replacement, as it uses F&G bags. I just love it when people install these upside down, and then get rid of their cleaners because they have no suction! As you can see from the photos, this needs a bit of a D&C.

In their infinite wisdom, the shop workers put packing tape over the price tag, directly over the decal/logo. I'll definitely have to use a hair dryer to remove that mess! Why oh why do they always put stickers and tape over the most sensitive areas?

I'll play with this some more after dark. Right now the its time for some tanning oil and Miracle Grow (Gardening). Oh, the last patent date is 1951, and I was rather surprised to see that this unit was made in Canada, not England like the Juniors.

Nice find. I really like these "junior" Hoovers. I had a 115 once upon a time but gave it away during one of my "Great American Garage Clean-Ups." Someone along the way had painted it brown hammertone so it didn't look right.

I do still have an original, new-old-stock Hoover bag for a 115, so it would be nice to find one someday. I like the very "curvy" shape of the bag.

After cleaning off perhaps the hairiest drive shaft I have e

and after cleaning out the bag tube, it still works like a charm! I'm amazed at the condition of the bristles; I don't think I've encountered a vacuum of this vintage with such long, intact bristles.

How difficult is it to find replacement bristle strips for these Juniors? Has anyone tried to rig up replacements from another manufacturer?

I grew up watching The Golden Girls, Monty Python, Benny Hill, etc, and I've worked in restaurants and janitorial positions; not too much phases me! What was it that made you ask? The "hairiest drive shaft ever" comment? LOL

Back to the Hoover...
I am growing more and more fond of it everytime I pass by it. I had a '70's Junior years back, but it was pretty baffed out and is long gone. I try to take excellent care of all my possessions. Ideally, I like to completely dismantle, detail clean, lubricate, and reassemble my vacuums and small appliances, but with work and school, it doesn't always happen.

As far as raunchy humour, bring it on!
