Greetings vacuum collectors!

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of going to Georgia to visit my friend Toby. Toby has a collection of maybe 100-150 machines. He collects mainly canisters, but does have a few GE and Hoover uprights, as well as a Kirby and a Bison. He has several "mint" machines in their original boxes, including a Swivel-Top and a Rexair Model B.

Anyways...as the title says, I have been before. The first time I only could stay for a little while and we mainly toured the collection. This time, however, we got to pull a few machines off the shelves and give them a try, as well as do some maintenance. It was a lot of fun!!

My goodies that I took home were a Filter Queen, with attachments, including the manual, polisher, and power nozzle...a Kirby DS-80 with EVERYTHING...boxes, attachments, manual, COLORING BOOK!...a Lewyt 44, which takes the cones, with hose, wands, and floor tool...two boxes of Heritage attachments, including the Turbo Group!...a Hoover N Special in all original (good!) condition except bag, and it's missing the bottom access port cover (to replace belt)...and lastly an Electrolux G with power nozzle, original hose and cord running along the outside, wands, and some attachments!

I had a great time visiting with Toby, playing with the machines, and lastly loading the car!! :-)

I forgot my digital camera, so I have no pictures of Toby's collection, but I will get some photos of my new "toys" when I get a chance.

Kyle,

Can you scan some of the coloring book, I would love to see that. Can't wait to see all the pics of your latest treasures.

Okay, pictures are here!

First up...the N Special! I took the bag off of my 105 Special to take the picture.

P.S. Sure, I'll scan that later. Maybe tomorrow, as I have a school project to finish up.

If I am not mistaken, this N Special was not a redone model like my 105 Special, in which they would take it back to the factory, paint it, and refurbish it. Here are some more pictures.

P.S. The motor is made my Robbins and Myers Co. They also made fans. This vacuum was produced in New Berlin, OH, presumably before Hoover had their N. Canton plant.

It's not in bad shape, so it'll be an easy restoration project, hopefully. The handle seems to either want to fly forward or fly backwards. This little piece seems to stop it from going too far back depending on how you set it.

Some Heritage attachments!

P.S. No problem! More than happy too! I figure it is not everyday you can see a N Special, right? :-)

This is the mess of the Filter Queen and Kirby DS-80. Both need a little work. The Filter Queen has the incorrect wiring and the Kirby needs a new bearing plate...but I can't unscrew the fan!!! GRR!!!

That sure was expensive back then, $40!!! Whew!!

A beautiful Elux G...needs original back wheels. Let me know if anyone has any. I'd love to make it all original!

Lewyt 44, which took cone filters like the FQ. FQ sued Lewyt and won! No wonder they went out of business!

Your model N is not rebuilt. All models Ns are called specials. The handle adjustment bar is quite primitive and offers far less control than the 105/541/543 style. I have the same setup on my specal 102 (special meaning rebuilt in this case, I think) and the bag inflation often causes the handle to fall back.

Interestingly enough, you have a one piece handle. I have a manual for an old special and baby (no model # specified) that uses a 3 piece handle and all really old Hoovers I have seen use them, like the Junior in that ebay auction. I'm assuming my manual is actualy older than the model N, as it never says it's for a model n, just a special. On the other hand, my manual says North Canton and you have the older New Berlin name. Just adds to the old Hoover confusion I guess.
