Thought I'd say Hi

VacuumLand – Vintage & Modern Vacuum Enthusiasts

Help Support VacuumLand:

Just thought I'd introduce myself; my name is Nick Drummond, and am pretty new to vintage vacuums. I've always loved vintage stuff...appliances, toasters, radios, cars, etc etc. But vacuums...now I hadn't thought of that before, but I'm glad I did! Actually, I have 2 vintage cars right now; my two babies; a 1956 BMW Isetta (being restored) and a 1961 VW Bug. So yeah, I kind of like little cars...In fact, microcars and bubblcars are one of my passions (hence the isetta). So I've always been attracted to the more unusual vintage stuff...which I guess lends itself to vacuums. As of now, I am vacuumless. My newer vacuum bit the dust, which is kind of great, cause now I have an even better excuse to get an awesome old one! Since I love bubblecars, the Hoover Constellation is naturally at the top of my list, along with, well, a bunch of other stuff. I also like the Electroluxes, and am considering getting both a Constellation and Electrolux G or XXX. At least for now. This seems like another addictive hobby. Also forgive some of my "vacuum ignorance" as I'm still trying to figure out all the different models and what's what. Several club members have been great in introducing me into the hobby, recommending this, or advising that...thx!(I can't remember your names right now-sorry!) Anyways, thats a little about me, and my obsessions...

The Isetta Again

Oh, and here's the isetta again. Both pics were taken when it was "together" at the previous owner's house (being restored now- disassembled)

Oh!

Although in the wrong forum...

Fantastic! Beautiful cars!

I'm a Volkswagen guy through and through! I've been obsessed with bugs as far back as I can remember being 'into' cars. I will own a bug someday... I've got a collection of Matchbox VWs, literature, old ads, VW books, etc... I do like the pre '67 bugs, but when I do decide to actually get one (when money allows), I think I'd go for something between '68 and '72.

BMW Isetta! That was Steve Urkel's car on the TV show Family Matters... lol

Love those, too! They're so tiny that you can park them perpendicular to the curb when wanting to parallel (or perpendicular in this case). Don't see those every day!

Very cool! Thanks for sharing!

Welcome, Nick,

from a former Annapolitan! I've had two Bugs in my life - a dark blue '71 semi-automatic Super Beetle with custom tan leather interior, and a '68 'standard' Beetle in white with black interior. Of the two, the blue Super Beetle was the best overall. It was in splendid mechanical and cosmetic condition. The white one was kind of a 'mutt dog,' purchased in a pinch when I needed something cheap to get me from A to B.

The only thing with me is that I am not particularly endeared to cars that always need to be tinkered with (vacuum cleaners as well, for that matter!). I want to be able to jump in, fire up the igniton, and GO. The Bugs always seemed to have something or another wrong with them and I finally got frustrated in each case and got rid of them. Especially the white one. OMG, it was so unpredictable! Sometimes the starter would stick and I would have to reach under the chassis with a steel pool and whap-whap-whap on it to free it up. What a Mess!

I remember the first one I ever saw -- actually two at the same time! The mother of my schoolmate in the 4th grade, Billy Mullis, got a new red Beetle in 1966, and one of my teachers at the same time got one in powder blue with white interior. I can still recall the distinctive scent of the vinyl material used for the interior. Not quite "new car leather," but it did smell good!

Mrs. Mullis' was the first car I ever saw with a windshield washer and I was forever tempted to press it to watch it go!

Thanks again, and again, welcome!

thx! (and sorry for posting in the wrong forum!) Actually, I have been very impressed with the bug in terms of reliability. My "modern" car is an early 90's Ford Festiva, and its ok (had to replace the alternator & some stuff, and there have been better looking cars...lol), which always starts, but sometimes it may take a good 6 or 7 tries on a cold day, and a bit of praying. I've owned the bug for about a year, and oddly enough, the 46 year old bug starts perfectly on the first turn, every time!! It has never let me down...its my baby. And now I'm getting into vacuums...why do I have to have so many hobbies?! And there's so many great and wacky vacuums...I hate choosing! While I'll probably be getting a Constellation and Electrolux G (or XXX-still can't choose), I found a 1923 Royal upright on Craigslist. They're asking $125, which seems somewhat pricy, considering so many of you have found great vacuums for next to nothing! Its got the original bag, and works, and looks "ok", but still, is $125 too much for a "fair" condition 1923 Royal? I love it, but don't know if I should just pass it up, or if I'll have another chance to get one. On another note, I found an old Filter Queen on Craigslist also that has all the attachments, papers, and boxes for $20. that seems like a better deal so I might go for that one, just cause its so much more affordable. Ahh! Why does there have to be so many awesome vacuums to choose from?!?
