I went to change the bag in my Eureka Smart vac and found that it had torn! It wasn't overfilled, and it was the genuine original bag that came with the vacuum! I guess I'll have to use the Dyson to clean it out... if this sounds familiar, it's because I had a similar explosion with my Miele Plus about a month ago... it was a mess, but I was using non-genuine bags and had sucked up baby powder so that was kind of expected... this is crazy! It looks like the bag tore because of the weight (there was some cat litter in the bottom, but not an extreme amount). I think the the way it is designed is poor.... the bag is held in place and suspended in the dirt chamber, so the weight of the dirt pulls on the bag and separates the cardboard from the bag. What a mess! Thank heavens for the pre-motor filter, which was covered, but probably saved the motor from all that dirt.

baby powder clogs the pores, no air flow, and cat litter has a high ammount of dust in it that will do the same = bag tears

for cleaning tests i use oatmeal and cornmeal, it will dance in front of the vac, paper from a cross cutting shreader does good too, little confetti squares

Joe, I use the paper shreddings in my videos too, but my paper shredder does a diamond cut instead of a cross cut )

I used cat litter (clean) for the first few tests, but not anymore.... it was hard to see in the videos, so I started using paper shreddings exclusively. Oatmeal is a good idea, I never thought about that.... of course then I hear a mother fussing about starving kids in china and how I shouldn't waste food and wagging a finger at me!

The cat litter in this bag is from just normal use.... the stuff Jasper kicks out of his litter box when he's done doing his thing.

Here's a video that shows the Eureka attacking the paper shreddings... I've compared it with the Windtunnel and the Dyson. It destroyed the Dyson, but maybe did a little better than the Windtunnel. You can almost see in the above picture a piece of paper shredding on the pre-motor filter...

That's why you gotta love your Dyson...

I took my DC17 to our rental this weekend. Spending almost 9 hours cleaning, but that's a different conversation. Anyways, the carpets were professonially cleaned Friday. I was amazed at the dirt the came up from vacuuming. I guess when you live in a place for a few years and haven't vacuumed for the past year, that can happen. Anyways, my point is that it was wonderful because I would have filled at least 2 big vacuum bags (I over-filled one Kirby bag when I had to clean there last time). A torn bag would never happen on a Dyson.
Although, when I had my DC07, I grabbed the latch wrong when I was going to empty the canister and released the bottom. Needless to say, my dirt was all over my Dyson.

I never had a burst bag on my Smartvac, even after vacuuming up stuff like flour. never had a bag break on any vacuum.

No torn bags (yet) with my Eureka Commercial vac... it takes LS bags, which are very sturdy.

I did once tear a bag in my big Rigid stainless shop vac. I think the problem was that I checked the bag mid-way, maybe while the vac was on, and put the lid back on crooked or something. It was just redwood chips (I had it connected to a table saw) and there was also a HEPA filter in there as well. Easy clean-up.

So don't peek at the bag while the vac is running... ;-)

I used to have one of those and always found it difficult to remove a bag when it had debris. I always had to be careful that it didn't tear around the collar.
