In the summer of 1962 when I was six years old and would be entering the first grade of elementary school in the fall, my family moved to a rural farmland area near the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia. Daddy, a Southern Baptist minister, had "accepted the call" to a small country church. One of the church's enticements was the offer of building a brand-new parsonage for us to live in. And off we went.
It was a truly grand two-story house. Every bedroom had a large walk-in closet about 5 ft. deep and almost as long as the length of the bedroom. I shared my room with my little brother. I didn't mind too much not having my own room, since I claimed that closet as my "inner sanctum" where I kept a desk stocked with school and art supplies. I would hang out in there alone most of the time I was at home -- drawing, coloring, painting ... pictures of vacuum cleaners!
I clearly remember one day when I was sitting in there and looking around at the large space I thought to myself, "I wish I had one of every model of Electrolux ever made, and I'd keep them in here."
It took a few years for that wish to be fulfilled but it was -- and then some! Not only do I have one of every model Electrolux ever made, I have most it not all of the sub-models and variations, with some duplicates to boot! (I say this not to gloat or brag but just to express amazement that my childhood dream so fully came true.)
-ooOoo-
Well, last week Arlee left for an extended trip to the Philippines to take care of some family and household matters. I had hardly driven home from taking him to the airport when I went out to my workshop and started bringing vacuum cleaners upstairs. I got the great idea to bring up all my favorite Electroluxes and do a photo shoot of them arranged in chronological order.
While ALL pre-1975 Electrolux tank models are my favorites, I am more partial to some over others. Missing from this photo extravaganza are Models V, XI, XII, early variations of the XXX, late LX & LXI, late E-A, late Turquoise G, Tan G, Hospital Gs, all of the Model Ls and all of the duplicate machines. There =is= a limit to my insanity!!
Most of these Electroluxes have been stored in my workshop ever since we moved here in 2010 so they're dusty and tarnished, as you can see from the first photos I took. But I just couldn't wait to start taking photos! However, they are all in perfect running order, 100% original, and in most cases with all of the attachments and optional accessories.
Here's a big load of photos for you, which I'll post in several batches.
(P.S.: Keep in mind that these machines look far better in "real life" than some of them do in photos, especially closeups that reveal every tiny blemish. This is particularly true of the light-color models [F, R, S etc.]).
