I picked up this Thermax at the Salvation Army today, but I don't know much about them. My question is how much water do you put in the container, and is it missing any other components to the container?

As you may know, that is the recovery tank, The cleaning solution is filled in the round hole of the main body, Of course the machine should also have a vacuum hose, solution hose, and wand assembly. Capacity was not too much, maybe a couple gallons.

Tank seems complete but I have never actually used one.I do have hose,power nozzle,attachments and rack,etc. for brown and also later probably complete green version if you need anything.Might still have instructions.As I have time and come to them ALL Thermax will GO.Anyone want??

Fill it about 1/3 of the way up, if you'd like, I'll take a pic of the tank on mine when I get home, it has the sticker on the side telling you how full to fill it for vacuuming.

In picture number two, you'll not a cross beam of plastic about 1/3 of the way up from the bottom, joining the two plastic stacks. The water fill line is just under that cross beam. When using it as a vacuum cleaner, be sure the dip tube (black in your photos) is attached to the lid. For wet pick up, REMOVE the black tube from the lid.

Last night when I tested it there was hardly any suction. After further tearing down and cleaning the rubber strip that goes around the vacuum wasn't allowing the top portion of the vacuum to sit properly causing the lid on the container not to be level with the water bin. Now it's running and sucking great! The hose and power nozzle issue--The power nozzle is missing the (gray or black) strip that goes across it and as you can see in pic 2 of the electric hose the broken plastic. All and all a interesting machine. I haven't tested the water pump yet.

Parts are still available for this machine (see link), although a bit pricey. Keep an eye out on eBay and you'll probably be able to get a good hose. If you need any of the gaskets, I'd suggest just getting those new, as those parts aren't badly priced. Mine didn't come with any of the shampooing attachments sadly, but if you plan on using it for wet pickup and you're missing the float ball and its holder, I'd definitely recommend getting it, its only $9, and I believe it comes with the float ball too, but if not, thats only another $2.

I am curious as to if these machines are actual carpet steamers or do they function like a Hoover carpet cleaner?
I'd love to find an in home carpet steam cleaner for heavy duty cleaning. I really need it with two German shepherds and party animal roommates haha.

No, it doesn't use steam, it's just a spray and wand system. The spray pressure on them wasn't too great. The wands were also way too short for me i had to bend down to use the carpet cleaning head.
I would recommend looking into the Bissell Big Green 86T. I've got the rental model and it's the best carpet cleaning machine i've used.

Only their dedicated carpet extractors have heaters in the water. I have a 1976 Rinse'N'Vac made by Thermax, Its an excellent machine, I had to replace the pump when I got it, I put the 60PSI pump used in their newer machines in it, and it really works well! The water has steam coming off it in the tank!

Wow I almost grabbed a rinse n vac off of craigslist. Old green thing with yellow tanks and had about 6 wands. Unfortunately the seller never got back to me. Would have loved to have a true carpet extractor in my home. Especially for my car

I actually do have a dealership with them however I really don't do much with them unless it's a request. I have this same brown model new in box. Mine is dated 1986. They are a pretty good vacuum just bulky and cumbersome to use. I like these better than the new design model (AF2). These coffee table models have a little more power suction than the newer ones. The filter that goes under the water pale is discontinued on this so you will have to make up your own foam filter (myself I use an AF1 filter). The carpet extraction on these aren't anything special however they are an excellent upholstery and or auto seat extractor if you have the small upholstery tool (kind of pricey).
The original power nozzle that went to this was more of a Filter Queen type where as this one (still current) is Hoover. I think a wessle werk ot hayden or even old school Eureka nozzle would greatly improve carpet grooming.
When these were more common the prices for them was off the charts. I knew of a place in Denver that sold them for $3000 and I knew of places that sold them for $1500, really just depended on the dealer. Myself I have/had the AF2 for $1100 and I want to say the big one like this (now called the AF1) is close to the same price.
