i think that's great!!! the machine looks to be in GREAT condition. It is a steep price for an old machine but it will run forever if it is taken care of. i don't blame the person for buying it. if i were an electrolux fan like i am a kirby fan i certainly would have purchased it. lux's are good vacs so i hope the person gets great joy out of using it!!!
 
Yes, I agree it's a lovely vacuum. But I have =never= seen a Model F go for that kind of dough -- and there have been a couple that have appeared on eBay that were far lovelier and more complete, including one not too long ago with everything under the sun that came with it, all the optional accessories and stuff, plus the original box, instruction manual, packages of vintage unused bags, etc etc etc, and it didn't go nearly that high. The F simply is not old-enough a machine to be considered that rare, unless, of course, it has the original (and the first for Electrolux) power nozzle. Anyway. Not going to keep plotzing over this, I was just amazed that's all. Guess someone just really, reeeeeeeally wanted it!!
 
Model F

I have only seen one Model F go for big dough on Ebay. It was 4 or 5 years back...The vacuum itself was not in that great of condition, but it did come with the original power nozzle...the first to be made by Electrolux. I'm talking about the power nozzle that is the matching gray color of the AF with the continuos cord that runs all the way from the power nozzle itslef to the machine outlet. There were no breaks in the cord...(very rare) As I have always been told, the first power nozzle was considered an "attachment" not a standard tool that came with the vacuum. I can definately understand that because each time you used the power nozzle and were finished you had to disconnect the entire cord from the hose, etc. That Model AF that went for big dough 4 or 5 years back is in a friends collection now and it is beatiful. It is the only one that I have seen complete...

Anyways, as I'm sure most of you know, the power nozzle in the current auction on Ebay is not the original, nor is the "snake" cord that is on the hose. The power nozzle that has the blue trim didn't get introduced until the first of the blue Model G's were made. Also, some of the late late late Model R's had this same power nozzle as well. (I have advertisement pictures). This was before they introduced the first Model L that was white w/ blue trim as the lower priced option for those who couldn't afford the Model G.

Ok, I've gone on long enough about the Lux's...I can't help it I like them so much!
 
Power Nozzle

Charlie, don't you also have an original AF Power Nozzle PN-1 in your collection?

I think you have said the the AF is either one of your favorite machines, or that you have more complete units then your other machines (can't remember right now), and while I think it is an attractive machine, I think it pales in comparison to the AE and then the G. It's merely painted, all though two-tone, whereas the AE was hammertone, and the G, well, the G is just beautiful. They must of had problems with the rather weak tip-guard on the E's, but I think what they came up with on the AF is rather ugly. The views expressed by myself, Crevicetool do not necessarily express the opinions of my model XXX which just overheard me say that the G was beautiful.
 
The AF is not my favorite Electrolux but I have a more complete set of that model than any other Electrolux. I do remember seeing many of them when I was a kid, so it is a good machine from that standpoint.

I think the color combination is nice -- subdued yet elegant, perhaps a deliberate contrast from the merry color of its predecessors, the E and AE. Then of course with the G, yes, they pulled out all the "Retro Stops" to give it its "Jetsons-esque color and design aesthetics.

The Model F on Ebay I was referring to above from 4 or 5 years back went for close to $700. :-)
 
Mmm, guess I missed it. Even for that kind of money, my complete late F is not a machine I'd ever sell. It's just too beautiful, and the power nozzle is so significant in the Electrolux timeline. "They'll have to pry it from my cold, dead hands."
 
PN-1

Don't you just love how well the PN-1 cleans? The smaller suction opening on the bottom really directs all of the air-flow (suction) straight to the dirt. Plus, they are really quiet compared to other Lux power nozzles. :-)

Do you ever use your older Lux's to clean with or are they display only? I remember one time you said you use a Silverado for heavy cleaning.
 
The PN-1 is an excellent carpet tool. I do rotate my machines and use all except the really oldest ones -- while the Model V is cute and fun to play with, it's largely useless for serious cleaning. I use the Silverado when I am doing "real" cleaning - around the baseboards, ceiling corners, under tables etc. because it has such good straight suction. But I do use all my other Electroluxes, just depending on what mood I'm in. Typically, I'll bring one out and let it sit around in the living room for a couple of days, just enjoying walking in the room and seeing it there, then use it a few times, then swap it with something else.
 
Vac on display...

Charlie I like the fact that you bring a vacuum out to your living room to view it for a few days and then swap it for something else. What a great way to display your collection and I'm sure when you have guests over it's a great conversation starter. My partner doesn't mind my vacuum collection..he is actually quite happy that I have such a great hobby...but I don't think he would let me leave a vacuum sitting around the living room. haha. I think it's a great idea though.

Hey whatever happened to that Lux Model R that I re-painted in hammertone blue and sent to you? (years ago) Didn't you give it to a friend or something?

I was also thinking back today and do you remember that I live about 45 minutes from where you grew up...Wasn't it called "Snow Creek?"

I'm kind of shocked by that price too. The AF was our first Electrolux and it lasted for a good twelve years and beyond given that it was handled by a brute of a user and at the end of its life was held together by strips of masking and electrical tape. I always wanted to see that gray AF power nozzle in person, but I've yet to find one in our area.

Wasn't it you that said it was one of the noisiest models of its generation? Also, I remember you saying that you preferred the original Bell(?) cordwinder, but the Electrolux model will always be my favorite even though it stands out like a sore thumb. Interestingly, we were sold a model that must have been built right between the two versions of the AF's that you have illustrated. Ours had the new version cordwinder with the old rubberbumper-less suction cover. We were also given the gray braided hose that was coupled with the R, not the cross-hatched one you have with your F.

You must have also noticed this, but every AF/F I've ever seen has an "F" stamped on the metal ID plate on the bottom of the machine superimposed over the "E" of "AE". Was this model an early attempt on the way to the "G"?

Logan, yes it's fun to have the "sweeper du jour" on display, ready to go. It always gives me a little thrill to walk in and see it there. When I was a kid, it was always a very special treat whenever I went to someone's house and the vacuum was out, ready to be used.

The F is, by far, the noisest of the AE, F an G models. The motor itself is not louder but the roar of the exhaust is. The rear filter was done away with so there's much more exhaust emanating, and the F had no muffler of any sort, just an aluminum baffle. Bowever, the G has both a baffle and a felt muffler to cut down on the noise.

And, yes, I've noticed how the F is "overstamped" over the AE!

I don't remember who has the painted R now. I did give it to someone but don't remember who. It may have gone during one of the "Great American Garage Clean-ups."
