Must be the pre-war dry cell battery pack model.

I think this is the first vacuum manual - photo or line drawing - that doesn't show a cord in a single picture. Oh those folks at Universal were clever...

Perhaps hubby built his own version of the Wardenclyffe tower in the back yard?
