Decided to try the Kirby as a hand-held to vac the mattress. Quickly learned two things; first you need the strenght of "Sweety Face" (think Fibber and Molly) to use it, and second the tube to the bag gets kinked almost shut.

Hose kink

I've found that the new "snap" type fill-hoses are prone to kinking! I've replaced a couple on the machines I've restored where they were badly kinked! I didn't think the older Heritage and G-series tubes kinked at all?

When I use my Ultimate G for the mattress

I unzip the permanent bag, pull out the disposable bag, rearrange the dirt in the bag so it's not so bulky at the bending point, then bend and attach to the portable handle. Then I put the Kirby on the mattress, put it on the lowest setting, engage Tech Drive, and go. I leave the brush roll engaged for that deep-down cleaning.

I always let Tech Drive do the work because the combination of the powerful suction and the weight do make it harder to handle as a portable. I've read Kirby manuals that say not to use Tech Drive in the portable mode. I say YEAH RIGHT. 23 pounds of weight combined with Kirby suction force, make Tech Drive a necessity on mattresses.

I can't say I ever tried vacuuming my mattress with my Heritage II... I wonder if that'd work better than the Simplicity Freedom I usually use for that?

Vacuuming matteresses is common in DTD vacuum demos-any brand. The session with the matteress convinces the prospect to buy the vacuum when he or she sees the stuff vacuumed from a matteress that hasn't been vacuumed before. The customer may even get the same results if he used his own vacuum. Most folks don't think of vacuuming their matteresses. When another fellow and I were selling TriStars-we did the matteress thing-most of the time the person bought the vacuum!

I have a heavy mattress cover which gets laundered a few times a year, but vacuumed every couple weeks.Normally a turbo brush or powerhead cleaner.

I vacuum my mattress weekly when I changed the sheets. I though that was common since my parents always did theirs every time the sheets were changed. Vaccuum all the pillows also.
