The spirit of the 70s The Compac C9

Nice video. I don't know why you think the switch is "strange"? I sold that model brand new in 1978. The correct, original electric hose makes a world of difference. The bojack hoses are never satisfactory, with the exception of the Hayden-made hose.

It would have been nice if you told the story of IEC, and the relationship they had with Howard Hughes and his aircrafts. If you told the story of how IEC became a door to door vacuum manufacturer. And if you gave more of the 'why' things are like they are.

In any event, I did watch the whole thing and applaud you for your efforts.

@dysonman1 Thanks Tom!
I meant that the cord hook combination switch I can't think of any other vacuum where the cord hook in the on-off switch or the same part.
I do love the seamless art Deco design peeking through the 70s Prasad.

There's a Link in the video description and on Facebook to your article with the story that you wrote up on Compac. Which by the way that used to be the highlight of getting the VDTA magazine was reading your articles!

Thanks you've given me a great idea for the video I now need to find an airplane I can borrow to show it going down the airplane aisle.

Gota love Compact IEC

The vintage Compact C9 vacuum are truly remarkable and a test of time on a simple yet effective design .Simple yet effective if it aint broke dont fix it .You did a wonderful job whit your video better than i did whit my Compact C9 .Like mention above id recommend getting an original hose whit better connection at the handle end .Like the one i have on my machine here .
And yes the Compact vacuum history dates back to the late 30s early 40s whit the Huge hog ward air craft being clean by the daysies (women employes ) back in the day .After the war and surplus the Compact Brand decided on selling the machine to the open public in a door to door policy like they do today .After that the rest is history as they say such a good power full simple design that stand the test of time .

@compactc9guy Thanks for posting that infograph. I really would like to create or at least make a list of the different color variations and styles over the years.
Like in the 80s there were the two speed models some of them were different colors of red and silver variants. Is there any sense to there serial numbers?

<hr />
The 2 speed was only red whit silver handle cxl 2 speed or c80 2 speed  and also c9 red il double check my info and get back to you.Vacuumdevil performance reviews.

Hey

The switch is not weird it's similar to Kirby where you push it turns on. I have a c8 with crap hose. Knowing Antoine and Toms testimony I'm going to buy oem non electric hose. I painted mine green. I just need bumper thing which I threw away. I thought motor was dead but rewired and painted.
I was going to retro fit hose ends but I'm not going to. I'd get electric power hose but it's my shop vac.
The motor is used in power team backpack commercial vacuum and there highest rated commercial vacuum. The iec where brilliant.

I prefer those OLDER Compact-TriStars over the new "lux" style ones.ANY canister vacuum can crash into your heels if you pull it too hard.Just don't pull on the hose as if you are a railroad car puller and you do just fine.
Agree on those hoses with the pigtails on the attachment end-If the pigtail can be removed for hand tool work-so much the better.That is a poor design.
The airflow action in the bag is modeled after wingtip vortexes on airplane wings.Next time you ride on an airliner--an older model without the "winglets"you will see the wingtip vortex.has a spiral appearance.This keeps the bag from clogging.These days if a vacuum is used on an airliner-the machine is equipped with a small 3ph 208V 400Hz motor.These spin as fast as the universal motors used in 60 hz vacuums.There is no brushes or sparking in the 400hz motors.These are approved by the FAA for airplane cleaning.Their new regs prohibit motors with sparking parts.The concern around aircraft fuel.Don't know why they insist on that-aircraft fuel is less volatile than gasoline.If you look under som,e airliner seats you will see the 400hz outlet for the vacuum.

Hey

The pistol grip fit on end of the hose. I don't even have to own but yes the filter restrict the flow.
There might be other opinions but if you the amount of air flow that goes in bow leaves the motor goes out the motor hole you put a filter in there not as much bear flow is coming out of the hole it is backlog and it is not as a z fishing that's you put anything in front of an exit that has to go somewhere and blocks the direct airflow pass that is just common sense that the filter is going to block the air pull air flow pass it restricts it

As for the pistol grip hose being better, yes I will agree it might be a little more convenient to use since it makes plugging in the powerhead wire a little easier since it just plugs into the handle. Having said that, I actually prefer the generic hose with the metal handle Alex has on his Compact in the video. One flaw the pistol grip handle on the genuine hose has is the metal tube becomes loose & moves around in the plastic handle & requires replacement after a few years. The metal hose handle on the metal hose handle won't break & is much more durable. The only minor flaws I can see is that you have to plug in 2 wires when plugging in the powerhead, & you have to hold the hose cord in your hand while using the hose with tools or else it dangles. But, I can live with that if it means it's more durable.

The Compact was good for it's time, but I prefer the TriStar CXL & DXL over the earlier Compacts. Since the blower port is built into the metal port & angles up as Alex says in his video, you can't modify the blower port like you can on the later TriStar's that use the plastic blower basket that you can easily modify to take a larger motor like the Ametek 115923/117923 like Miele canisters used to use. Also, the Filter Fresh, while it does improve filtration, severely restricts the airflow on a Compact or TriStar. You could use the HEPA Dome available for them, but you cannot use the Patriot Medik Aire HEPA filter that the Patriot/Airstorm canisters use on a Compact because of the blower port being angled straight up. You can use it on a TriStar CXL or DXL, though, because the Patriot/Airstorm canisters use the same plastic blower basket that they use.

One thing I will say that the Compact canisters got right, though, was using the Eureka Roto-Matic powerhead & adding a air relief vent to it. It seems that the bottom plate on that powerhead allows the bristles to stick out a little farther & groom a little better than the TriStar CXL/DXL version that Interstate Engineering designed to replace it.

Speaking of filtration & the bags, I recently discovered there is FINALLY a HEPA Cloth bag available for the Compact/TriStar canisters! It's about time a company came out with them for these vacuums :-)

Thats why i only use the filter cap not the filter fresh on my Compact C9 because it restric air flow so much whit enviro care paper bag and the cloth bag i see little to no dust get past the motor .
