The Robots are Coming..

The only robot vacuum I would consider would be something like the Deebot by Ecovacs, as linked below. A docking station that automatically empties the robot after each cleaning session is nothing new in itself, but this one also incorporates a detachable mains powered portable canister unit. Not sure if other companies offer anything similar, but it's the first robot I've seen that even addresses above-floor cleaning.

Even then, we're still at the stage where a robot can clean a hard floor well enough, but only make a carpet *look* clean on top. Just like a cheap stick vac, it merely titivates. For the money charged, I'd expect something that performs more along the lines of a high end corded vacuum. Only when that happens will they move away from gadget territory and finally be considered a practical appliance.

I forgot to give my actual overall opinion on robotic vacuums in general as I was too busy being disappointed about the miele.

First let me start by saying that I do own several from various price points and brands and of various ages.
I think they are useful, I don't have the ability to vacuum everyday anymore due to having far more things going on related to school and scouts and I really like the robots for "keeping up".
As for cleaning performance I feel my worst one is equal to your average stick vac, and my best one cleans better than any stick vac or suction only canister I have used. And it even rivals certain uprights or PN canisters (of course, the worse ones) But still, it is very impressive.

Although they do still need work, and for most situations will not replace a regular vacuum, I think they are certainly not toys and can run with some full sized vacs.

P.S, I do think they are overpriced though!(;
