The Kirby 505 polisher

Although a bit awkward to use, this polisher design is actually more efficient than the next version where there's a separate housing for the power polisher brush. With this earlier style, more pressure is exerted against the floor due to the overall more forward-pointing angle of the motor body, making more heat, melting the wax more quickly and thoroughly and, thus, shorter polishing time.

Some old-timer Kirby salesmen compensated for this by instructing the user to lock the handle in its lowest position, then lift the handle up. Doing so places just the polisher brush on the floor with no wheels. Again, faster, more efficient work.
