That's a gorgeous Eureka! I'm growing more and more fond of the Ironsides canisters.
I think that is a common problem with most Eureka's. If they would have come up with a better bag connection their motors would have lasted a lot longer. Fine dust would always seep through causing bearing problems.
All the Eureka's in my collection (canisters) suffer that same problem. I also think if they would have all used the Filtrete bag that they now offer, it would have made a huge difference.
It would be nice to see Eureka bring back the Ironside cleaner wtih the older style tools, using horse hair brush inserts and the three peice wand (2 straight and 1 curved). They were great cleaners. If they were to add a little foam inside the motor chamber to quiet the machine, improve the bag and perhaps add a Hepa filter they would a great vacuum.

I have that same model in equal condition! I learned from RJ Vanik in the vac club that you can shroud the motor with a white cotton terry cloth bonnet with elastic border (the kind that I think is supposed to fit around those electric car polishing buffers) in other words, the type that is used to wax your cars. Generally, they are really cheezy these days so the poorer the quality the better! Why? because the thinner they are the more air they will allow to pass through to the motor. I have asked RJ if there is any possibility that it could harm the motor, causing it to over heat and he said no and has tested this technique to some degree. When the bonnet gets dirty, simply pull it off and toss into the washer! You will notice how quickly it turns grey/brown! Give it a try and let me know what you guys think!

What I have done...
in the past on the Princess and Ironsides Eureka canisters is to put felt around the hose opening on the inside of the vacuum so that a seal is formed from the bag collar holder to the inside of the front of the hood. The terrycloth bonnet over the motor as Louis ( Hi Louis! ) mentioned is also a great idea.

Speaking of comebacks....
Koblenz had two models of vacuums a few years ago in the Princess and Ironsides metal bodies. Koblenz must have obtained the molds ( or is it casts ) from Eureka!

We have one like it execpt that is a more deluxe model with more features and the color is Maroon.I would have like Eureka bring back the Princess.
