Pigtail hoses

Ugh, good to know but bad that Aerus isn’t making them anymore. There’s still so may good AF’s, G’s, And L’s that could use them still out there. I might have to call my shop and see if they have any left and bit the bullet and get one. I hate the external wire wrap, just annoying to have that wire at the hose handle always getting twisted....but I do have a new unused one I bought off eBay some years ago as well as some used ones I’ve taken from dead hoses.

Do you mind telling me how much it was? Just trying to get an idea. I heard at one time they were $99. Also, sounds like he shipped it. Did your cost include shipping?

Oh, and if you’d rather email me privately on the cost rather than publish it here, that’s fine, just click my profile to get my email address. I’m really wanting to get one or two of these hoses. I have a G that needs it and my Mom’s L is in beautiful shape but the Silverado era braided hose is starting to leak close to the handle as they usually all eventually end up doing and it’s in a family vacation home which my Brother and I will inherit and we both like the L and it serves the house wonderfully so keeping it in top top shape is something desired versus replacing the machine.

Thanks, Jon

I may contact Aerus customer service

This is really concerning me if it is in fact true that Aerus isn’t making these pigtail hoses at all anymore. There are many, many, AF’s, G’s and definitely L’s and some early 1205’s still out there in good working order that will need hoses still, you can see how many just on eBay alone that have bad, old, or non electric hoses with the external wrap. And for Aerus to not make it is kind of stupid...the only difference between the pigtail hose and the current Aerus Classic Lux Hose is the machine end...not that much to manufacture versus what they currently make. Hopefully it’s just a made to order item due to low demand.

The Aerus guy is on his way to deliver a Super J hose. I have a feeling he is going to try to sell me a new machine. I’ll nip that in the bud by showing him my collection of vacuums. I sent you an email with the total cost. Not cheap but the quality of the original Lux parts makes it worth it. You can still get aftermarket electric hoses for these machines with the pigtail, but for a purist, it just doesn’t make it.

This guy is an old time Lux salesman so I am sure he has some interesting stories. When I got the pigtail hose he said he had two but couldn’t order any more. That’s why I put out the message to grab any NOS while you can. Someone else on the site asked for his contact info so not sure he’ll still have it. If you contact Aerus Customer Service, let me know what they say. This guy may have jacked up the price by creating a fake shortage.

lux pigtail hose

i got a genuine lux hose for my mdl L; b4 that i had a coiled vinyl non-electric hose with external PN cord

i still have the non-electric hose & use it for vacing

hopefully aerus keep making the older pigtail hoses bcuz i once bought a generic & returned it bcuz the hose handle didnt swivel & too bulky & uncomfortable & incompatible with the sidekick

I suddenly decided to check eBay yesterday afternoon but there’s almost never any rubber pigtail hoses. However, a listing was suddenly there for one as a buy it now that had just been posted and it was a used genuine one. I immediately bought it. It was reasonably priced for a used item. From the photos it looks like it is in very good condition and I asked the seller to please cushion it well and put in in a box, NOT a soft side padded envelope. Shippers today literally throw everything and pile big heavy stuff on top of little lightweight stuff. At least I’ll have this one for now but will want a second to equip both my G and Mom’s L with them once her braided hose is completely kaput on her L and it’s beginning mild signs of internal wear out but it may last for quite some years more as it’s in a summer home that is only lived in regularly from Mid June through August and a week or so periodically throughout the rest of the year when anyone in the family decides to take a vacation there. Also, We try to never sharply bend the hose end near the handle or the cleaner as those are the areas that see the most wear...this helps extend the life of the hose for sure. It is also only being used for the upstairs level currently which is only two bedrooms and a small hall and small bathroom...for some reason my Mom swapped the Silverado we had up there to the downstairs where the L was, but said she did that after I got her a rubber hose for the Silverado as she likes the rubber hoses as they are more flexible and easier to use and the downstairs of that house is much larger than the upstairs having two living areas, a sizable dining room, kitchen and two bedrooms and when my parents are there alone primarily for those 3 months they use only the downstairs requiring regular cleaning and the upstairs only gets used when someone visits them.

Those braided hoses tend to unravel inside and then clog due to fuzz getting caught on the unraveling rubber liner. I’ve taken feet of fuzz out of these hoses in the past. It’s easy to do with a broomstick and properly removing the hose handle which is a special procedure to not break the electrical part of the handle. If people want to know the correct way to do this I can explain, most often it is done incorrectly causing damage, but an Electrolux man told me the correct way to avoid breaking, bending or compromising the part. The braided hoses can look good on the outside but be coming apart internally. Glad Electrolux finally did improve the hoses. That’s what I like about this company...they do keep on improving things, though I’ve seen less of it during the Aerus years. Not much has changed on an Aerus Lux Classic since before 2000 and that’s 20 years. But why mess with something that is near perfection.

I may try to get to the bottom of if Aerus is truly discontinuing things like the switches for the AE,AF’s and G’s and the pigtail hoses. The corporate office is about 10 minutes away from my house and while the Aerus contact us page sends me to the only single Dallas area Aerus dealer I would rather get this information from the corporate office directly for us. If it comes to it, I could literally walk in the corporate office front doors and ask the receptionist to see if there is someone who I can talk to to verify the availability of these items.

I have an XXX as well, and what if my switch dies? Wonder if they still make that too. With so many out there still, you’d think they would.

Anyway, compactelectra...if that salesman tries to sell you a new machine, hopefully you’ll foil his attempts with your impressive collection and you can just tell him...while a new machine looks awfully nice, you’d be more interested in buying replacement parts from him for your current collection. A beautifully running older machine can do a very nice job and work very well with a new hose and power nozzle and all the other attachments that wear down over time from use. I have to say though that my Aerus Lux Legacy I recently obtained does have impressive suction, even though it might be around 15 years old. I don’t think the machine was used much. I noticed the hose diameter is wider and those plastic wands too are wider inside allowing more airflow and this likely is attributing to this. I’m sure your renaissance is similar.

Hmm, yes, I can see how leaving a renaissance plugged in when not needed could make the circuit boards more susceptible to damage from things like power surges etc. we’ve had problems after storms with our refrigerator circuit boards and just recently our fridges electronic water and ice dispenser wouldn’t work right after a power flicker. I decided to shut off the breaker for the fridge for a few minutes, then turn it back on (so I didn’t have to move the fridge to unplug it) and sure enough, that did the trick and it is back to normal. But I do notice when doing this resetting attempt, you must wait a few minutes before powering back on. This is usually a “reset” technique if the board got “confused” but not damaged. Damn computer age. I wonder if there was a Jetsons episode with computer malfunctions!

So to ramble everyone. Killing some time with this covid mess. Aside from being on a shelter in place order, we actually decided it was better to start that on our own a few weeks sooner so it’s getting a little old but better than being sick and or dying from this mess. So...our vacuum cleaner hobbies get some attention!

Oh, I saw on eBay yesterday a rebuilt machine that looks like it was either a Golden Jubilee or Olympia or Silverado done in the Marquise colors. It’s hard to tell from the sellers photos if it has the metal rebuilt plate on it or not but I think it does from one of the pictures looks like it might be the edge of one of those plates. This would make it it a 1988 rebuilt model. It includes the matching Marquise era PN. It is listed as a Marquise but clearly is not as the top and bag door switch etc are all of the previous design consistent with the Golden Jubilee/Olympia/Silverado design.

Lux Turquoise G and Super J

Several folks on here, (Fred Nelson, Keith and Charles Lester for starters), inspired me to go to my storage unit and dig out these vacs for photo shots to share. My husband and I are building a new home and yesterday we went to see how it was coming along. The storage unit was on the way much to my husbands dismay. He is not into vacs.

The first pic is my G and the J. The G is all complete and original. It has the early PN-1 with no reset button and no clean out hole underneath. The J was brought to me by a man when I still had the vacuum business for a, "go over". He never returned to pick it up.

Then a turquoise G, "glam shot".

On the J, I replaced the original hose which was falling into shreds with a genuine Lux hose that I had. I also replaced the brush roll and belt as I had NOS to use up.

I told him at delivery time, I would upgrade his PN-4 with a PN-5 from a Diamond Jubilee that I was parting outand he would get much better results. See next pics.

Finally, after all the talk about the replacement pigtail hose.......at the time Fred got one several years ago, I decided to do the same so we could use our older vacs with much more suction, (due to the braided hoses failing), and the newer hoses were much more flexible. We've probably all knocked something off a table with those stiff braided hoses.

Last month I found a NOS PN-1693 on ebay and bought it. It was still wrapped in plastic and in the Lux box! I thought that was one of the best PNs that Lux produced and if I am not mistaken, it came on the Ultralux in the color scheme pictured.

So, I put the new hose and PN on the G and it makes one hellava cleaner! Those G's has a unique exhaust odor---sort of like cloves with a hint of cinnamon. I'm using the evacuumstore blue HEPA C bags in all of these older Luxes as they provide the best filtration IMO. Pics show vac off and then on with the PN headlight on.

Since most of us are in some level of quarantine it sure is fun to bring out the old vacs and get creative.

Very nice machines

Those are very nice machines and nice that you have new hoses and power nozzles which really make for excellent upgrades to these machines.

Funny you mention the G exhaust odor. Just yesterday I decided to pull my G out of the closet and give the motor a spin. I always keep it stored with an empty bag in it so it doesn’t acquire an odor and sure enough after I ran it for a few minutes, stepped out of the room for something, then came back in, The whole room smelled distinctly of the Model G odor and I wondered why it is that all of the G’s that I’ve experienced have this odor? My Sister had one for the long time and growing up we had a few G that were rescues all of which had the same odor. The only thing exclusively different on a model G versus others is perhaps the bag compartment metal and definitely the back end metal of the unit itself...and I’m talking about the painted back end part just before the unpainted cordwinder part. It is definitely not made of dentable steel like all other models of the same general shape but perhaps die cast aluminum? Maybe when this aluminum gets warm from the motor it emits an odor? It has to be some permanent part of the vacuum cleaner that is emitting the odor, otherwise the odor would not be universal and exclusive to the model G. When I’ve taken the cordwinder off a G for repair, you can see the back end inside is even completely different than other models and clearly a different type of metal. I’m guessing this is where the “exclusive G odor” is coming from. You are not the first person to comment on this either....I read somewhere...perhaps here...more than a year or so ago about someone remembering his Grandmother having a G that “smelt funny” he wrote...spelling it just that way!

As Usual

Charlie Watrous’s machines are pristine. I have found that collectors are generally of one of two types. They either go for quality or quantity and Charlie and I fall into the former category. I did a bit of quantity but Charlie’s husband limits his quantity which I have discovered is a good thing. Being a widow lady I haven’t had such limits. Charlie and I used to send machines back and forth and I always appreciated getting machines back from him since he always subjects the machines to a spa treatment and they came back like new or more new. This is why I love watching the postings from Keith since his machines look like they were just delivered from the Electrolux man.

I’ll post some pictures soon of the Renaissance since it went to live with Charlie and came back after a spa treatment. Here’s a picture of how things came back from Charlie.

BTW

The Tan G originally came from Charlie and will be going back to him. The Ultralux is going to him as well. There are some great stories about that Ultralux including me buying it brand new in Palm Springs years ago when it was sold new and that it turned out to be my housekeeper’s favorite vacuum to use in Chicago. There’s a story about Charlie meeting my housekeeper Geneva and her almost slapping the crap out of him after he told her she “missed a spot”.

Hey Fred...………...you are spot on about Keith and his vacuums. Talk about being, "pea green with envy". His vacs are stunning. If I can't find them like Keith does then I try to make them look as good as his. And, you should know, about two years ago I found a really nice Renny. I liked yours so much that I got it.

I ended buying another one and between the two have a super nice one. Over the years there has been arguably more than just a little criticism about the Renny. I find it to be a really nice Lux with what seems to be a slightly longer hose than other models. I like the controls in the handle---it would have been nice to have another set on the base machine too.

Recently I bought a new PN motor for it along with belt and brush roll from the parent company of the Perfect line of vacs. The new model uses a serpentine belt so you need the belt and brush roll to go with it. That PN is so quiet now it is hard to tell if it is running properly. But it is! Makes a great machine better.

I've always enjoyed working on the vacs and making them look factory fresh. After years of experimenting I have found a collection of products that work with nearly
all models.

The story of the Hoover 29 is really the one that takes the cake! It did enjoy it's time here at summer camp :)

Vacuumlad1650:

I saw that model L too on eBay and noticed it was gone today and had considered buying it for the hose, then equipping it with a non electric hose with the external wrap and getting the power nozzle wand for it and reselling keeping the pigtail hose. You beat me to it. The seller wanted a lot for an incomplete unit as I noticed the power nozzle wands sheath and cord are not included. But glad that rare hose will be well used in a collection.

Jon
