William "Bud" Abbott (1895-1974) and Lou Costello (1906-1959) were an American comedy duo whose work in vaudeville and on stage, radio, film and television made them the most popular comedy team during the 1940s and early 1950s. Their patter routine "Who's on First?" is considered one of the greatest comedy routines of all time and set the framework for many of their best-known comedy bits.

THE ABBOTT AND COSTELLO SHOW ran on American television from 1952 to 1954 in syndication. "The Vacuum Cleaner Salesman" episode originally aired on January 16, 1953 (points of reference include Little Ricky's birth on I LOVE LUCY originally telecast on January 19, 1953, and the Inauguration of the 34th President of the United States, Dwight D. Eisenhower, on January 20, 1953). The show is comprised of different comedy sketches; the vacuum cleaner one appearing later. The cleaner is referred to as "The Little Samsung (Samson or Sampson) vacuum cleaner" unless it was just a bojack assembled by the properties department. Samsung was a trading company at the time.

Poor Costello ...

The vacuum cleaner is an Electrolux Model XII with the normally polished aluminum ends painted. However, the plain metal rug tool is from an earlier model.

Very interesting ... thank you for the information.

The machine in the sketch must have been repainted--the dark-colored ends and the light body threw me for a loop even though I did notice the circular logo on top which reminded me of Electrolux.

Wasn't TV

MUCH better in the old days!..Comedy that was actually funny, and funny for all the family too, not just the adults,,,
