The aforementioned POD (picture of the day) is alluding to the fact that among the equipment incorporated as standard inclusionary practice of packaging said Universal Jet99 vacuum cleaner - ie: "comes with", eg: "in the box", in lieu: "not in the box", the tubular steel extension devices (wands) fitted between, for example: an apparatus by which suction created within the vacuum cleaner compartment is directed to said receiving application (nozzle) be it for rugs and/or carpets, bare floors, etc., and by such causes an item to be "cleaned", or at least by such action, dirt and or dust has been otherwise disturbed, to be deposited within the unit designed specifically for the operation of catching and holding dirt (bag) and a similar connection device not rigid of construction, but rather flexible and colorful and considerably longer while pleasing to the eye (hose)- incorporates the previously described embossed "pattern" if you will - much in the same as the photograph I shared with you via Internet communication - that of which I erroneously described as "tweed-like" in said correspondence - you may remember, as I was lacking a specific word that would correlate a more precise description at the time due to the inevitable memory portion of the brain (area that stores information in human subjects collected by sensory receptors) lapse that I was experiencing.

Most anxiously awaiting further observations by interested parties involved relating to the subject at hand, those desirous of posting said observations in written form on this- exclusive to vacuum cleaner aficionados electronic media - I remain forever vigilant,

Universal uprights

My grandmother had a universal upright, brown bag red lettering saying universal. I have not seen any universal uprights like it on ebay or in images on the net. Were Universal Uprights rare?

Thanks

Bud

I'm with Alan, could you say that again!LOL, Glad that you pointed this out to me Rick, I think those textured wands are so neat and what a great idea. Really can't tell to much about he hose from the picture though.

Bud !

Thank you, I remember a neighbors Universal Probably from
the late 30's as at the time it was about 1950/51. I have
wondered the same thing. Were they only around Ohio ?? or
what (uprights that is )??
Have never seen or heard of a universal upright since !

Not in a million years kids....my fingers hurt from doing it the first time!

In the near future, I hope a lot of Universal information will be gained and made available to the club.

I have never seen an upright except in advertising. One was recently on EBay. If I would have to guess, from the late forties. It went WAY out of my comfortable price range. I can only describe it as "Kirby or Royal like". Later machines resembled Hoover Convertibles or Eurekas.

Rick, you could always just stand a Universal cylinder on end, strap it onto a KenKart, scotchtape the hose to the side, slap on the floor nozzle... and call it upright...

Davy Sprocket, full of it - ideas, that is...um...thems are?

Thanks Rick !

I have seen the early 50's one. In person and in a catalog pic. The late 40's upright is the one I saw as a young one.
As I remember the swivel wheel, like the older Eureka's.
Thanks again.
Norm

I would LOVE to have one of the later Universal uprights, like shown in the top ad. I have the blue tank cleaner, a straight suction Upright with the improved thread picking nozzle, and another from around 1929 with a revolving brush called the "Whirlwind." The Whirlwind has a ball bearing motor. Earlier Universals used zinc bearings which had a tendency to swell and seize the motor. Somehow, I get the feeling Universal sold alot more coffee percolators than vacuum cleaners.

Re. Universal

Did any of the uprights like the one pictured above have a purple bag? I was only 5 at the time when I saw this one, but still recall that purple Universal bag. The woman who owned it lived in Unionville, Connecticut, about 20 miles from New Britian. If I recall corectly, the bag was on the right.

Why, Rick. You're being way too modest. You omitted 'BS'
The less degreed Rick!

Degrees

Reminds me of one of the stories my dad liked to tell - but not from the pulpit!

There once was a minister serving a small rural church. On the sign in front of the church:

HICKVILLE BAPTIST CHURCH
Rev. Jeremiah King, B.S., M.S., Ph.D

Well, one Sunday after church, one of the little old ladies asked the pastor, "Now Reverend, what's all them initials after your name mean?"

Rev. King chuckled and said, "Ma'am, You know what 'B.S.' is, don't you?"

She gasped modestly and said, "Why, of course."

He relied, "Well, 'M.S.' is 'More of Same,' and 'Ph.D' is 'Piled Higher and Deeper!'"

Valerie.....

Thanks for posting the Universal ad. Now we know that Universal was making vacuums decades before Hoover!

You need to introduce yourself to the forum on the Off-Topic Discuss - O - Vac forum.

Rick, Rick, Rick! How do you figure 1919 predates 19-ought-8??
The other, less degreed Rick!

There is a reason why I have all those degrees after my name

Research son. Research. The following document will prove that Universal was manufacturing vacuum cleaners forty-nine years before Hoover. This document came directly from the Spring 2008 VCCC Newsletter.

Oh! I wish I hadn't been made to prove this whole thing. It's because I wouldn't let you talk to Alan right?
