Hey guys, I found an Electrolux that I've been wanting for only 25 dollars. Should I go for it? I was hoping to get the blue model, I think it's a little newer (Gaurdian?), but for this price, I can hardly pass it up if it's still available... the only Lux I have now is the Diamond Jubilee, and I never use it. I used to have their first upright, but it was so bulky and cumbersome, I threw it away.

What model is this, and how old is it if you know? Anything I should know about it? What bags does it take?

Thanks!

it is a renaissance, the first of the new design tanks. it has a longer cord, larger bag, soft touch controls on the hose, 3 speeds, top of the line lux and a totally new design for them

25 bucks its a steal

Yes, it is indeed a Rennaisance, Snatch it immediately! As for bags HESCO should have them. It takes Style "R" bags. They are different than the regular style "C" bags found on the older style canisters.

Excellent vacuum but I just never got into those big wands. Also I have heard that the hose can be a big problem with all of the controls. They are pretty expensive to replace when needed. When I was visiting a friend in Tucson this past year we found one outside on trash day. Of course we brought it home. It didn't work but Roger is very clever and took the hose apart and was able to fix the electronic control that was causing the problem. For $25 it is a good deal. I would get it just for the fun of it.

As Terry said...

The wands are bulky, and the controls on the grip are problematic. My controls failed (I bought the machine for $7.95 at a thrift shop), and I always had to disconnect the hose to switch the machine off.

That being said, I liked the machine, and wish that I had kept it.

thanks

Thanks guys.... I e-mailed the lady last night... then called this morning right after she responded to my e-mail. She still has the machine, and I'm going to go get it at 5 PM tonight. It's a 45 minute drive for me, but SO worth it.... and I'm kinda glad she's not available until later, it will give me a chance to wake up and do a few things first... She said her dad gave it to her and it was too big and bulky for her so he gave her a new one and she was just planning to throw this one away.... can you imagine? She said there are no problems with it, and it comes with a few attachments.... maybe I can stop by the Electrolux dealer on the way and pick up some bags in advance so it will be ready to go.

Thanks again, I'm excited :o) Been a while since I got a new machine :o)

Tell me about this Electrolux please;

Here is what I know:
It is a true Electrolux design. Compared to my 2100 it is very deluxe with a different and easier to use cord rewind, longer electric cord, deluxe tools that store on board and it came with the flip over rug/floor tool and extra wheels under the belly for added ease in guidance.
It was my understanding that the Rennaisance used a computer chip in the controls and WAS more prone to break. Can you just imagine most people droping the hose etc.
My model is the Epic 8000 which I understand went back to simpler switch controls. Mine does have 3 speeds and brush off/on and machine off/on on the handle.
What I always found interesting about the machine was that it was very modern looking BUT it was designed with the XXX in mind. Look at the rounded front cover, the trim and nameplate on the side and the Flat rear end. Even the grey color after the XXX.My Epic 8000 has the name in bright RED like the old XXX.
I have been told that the later ones were noisy but mine is very quiet and powerful. In some ways it was like the old 60 in that it was big and heavy, but a true Electrolux look and feel in a modern style.
I hope you enjoy yours.

Tell me about this Electrolux please

Bobby,
I forgot to tell you in my previous post to ALWAYS turn the machine off before removing the hose handle, hose from machine or separating the wands. This will help prevent electrical problems with the connections. This info was from an Electrolux salesman who had been in the Electrolux business for many years and gave me my home demonstration when I got my Epic 8000. I have had no problems with my machine in 12 years. At the time of purchase I bought an extra hose just in case there were problems with the hose handle. Of course I don't drop mine or use it outdoors or have kids using the machine.
I always have to remember that vac collectors are not normal users and take care of their equipment.

The adoption is complete. I got the machine! I must have really wanted it because I drove 45 minutes each way and had to wait 30 minutes (the lady was running late).... I usually don't even leave the apartment on my day off! It only came with an upholstery nozzle, so I still need to get a bare floor tool, crevice tool, dusting brush, and sidekick. I really want the sidekick.... all my other small nozzles with spinning brushes are turbo nozzles driven by suction, and I want an electrically powered one. Maybe I will get one when I finally find a Kenmore Progressive canister. I will check Ebay, but I don't know if they will have any that match. I got bags and filters for it at the Lux dealer (the new Luxes are so ugly!)... 50 dollars for 24 bags and 2 filters! That's crazy. I asked about belts and they said 13 dollars. I said screw that! Those belts almost never go bad, and are much cheaper on Ebay. No major problems to speak of... There is a cut in the cord, about 6 inches long, but none of the wires are missing their insulation. The bulb in the power nozzle was burned out, but I found one at Lowes (not in the vacuum section, in the bulb section, listed as an appliance bulb) of all places. I really like the headlight lens on this thing. The whole vacuum (body and power nozzle) was practically covered in white paint splotches, so I just spent an hour with a microfiber cloth, some alcohol, and a magic clean eraser making it look spiffy again. I also shined it up with armorall, and while not perfect, it looks 100 times better than it did when I brought it through the door. The brushroll was covered in long hair, heavy string, what looked like dental floss or fishing line, and thread. I cut it all off, and inspected the belt to make sure it was fine.... it was, no stripped teeth or anything. The experience wasn't without incident, however. When I took the power nozzle apart to replace the bulb, I couldn't get the silly reset button back in right. I spent about an hour trying to do that, and finally got it about 2 seconds before I was going to march the whole ensemble out the the dumpster and hurl it in. It was frustrating! Then, I got to do a little more vacuuming than I'd planned to. When I was bringing the cleaner in from the kitchen to the living room, I accidentally knocked over the bucket of water I was using to clean it with.... it went all over the carpet, even into the pantry... so I had to break out the Hoover Steam Vac and call him to duty. I had to take out my 2 ice cream makers and 2 food dehydrators from the pantry floor to get all the water up.... it was a mess! Oh yeah, before that, when I was posing the machine for the "after" picture, the hose began to fall... remembering your warnings about how delicate and expensive those electronic hoses are, I quick as a flash, dropped the digital camera on the hard tile floor and DOVE to save the hand grip/hose from a certain violent death... the camera missed the bucket of water by inches. I did save the hose though! The camera still worked, but I figured it was worth the risk... it's a 99 dollar camera, while a replacement hose is significantly more.

First impressions. I really like it! It sounds great and has a ton of power. So much quieter than my Diamond Jubilee. The electronic finger tip controls are in a good place, easy to reach, but not easy to accidentally activate (wish I could say the same for my LG made Kenmore Iridium). At first I didn't get the wheels on the cleaner base.... swivel in the front and back and fixed on the sides... but they really do help when spinning the cleaner around. I can't for the life of me understand why they didn't just do what Miele did and leave the two middle wheels off and just have swivel casters on the outside. The new bags aren't 4 ply anymore like my old yellow Germgrabber C bags are for the Diamond Jubilee, and they feel inferior. The machine and power nozzle are both quieter and more powerful than the DJ. Plus, the power nozzle has fixed wheels instead of "spring loaded" ones like the DJ. I think I'm really going to enjoy this machine. Here are some before and after pictures.... Oh yeah, the machine is a lot darker than the Craig's List picture indicated. Very utilitarian in gray and I would have preferred the more whimsical and playful blue and white Guardian, but as I said, for this price, I'll take it.

Thank you for all your help and advice!

power nozzle

what a mess... oh yes, and the previous owner had used carpet fresh, so there was powder and a nasty smell everywhere.... at least it didn't smell like animals or smoke!

After I cleaned the power nozzle and installed the bulb... look at all that mess that was in there!

after

after mini-spa treatment... gee it looks like I need to clean the bottom of my stove :o)

There were still a few stubborn paint splotches on the bumper, but I think my friend David is going to help me with that :o)

Hey guys.... I'm having trouble finding attachments that will work with my vacuum, let alone match, and fit in the on board holders... if you notice any on Ebay that would work with my cleaner, would you please point them out to me.... I think part of it is I don't know what the originals are supposed to look like. Thanks

Renaissance Tools

Bobby, The Renaissance models through the Guardian (all machines that take type "R" bags) use the same tools, although the colors may vary. There are several listings for newer white model Guardians and you should be able to see what the tools look like so that you can match them properly. The dusting brush is not a combination style like every other Lux had, and the crevice tool is very small but is actually extendable. I had the same Renaissance and I like it but I really would love to find either an Epic 8000 or the original dark gray with light gray trim Renaissance. I had the entire mono-tone light gray Lux line up for a while and the Renny certainly felt like it was more solidly constructed (as it should for the outrageous price tag). Good luck with your new find and happy vacuuming! BTW that Diamond Jubilee will give you years of dependable service, it may not be a top notch deep cleaner, but they certainly do stand the test of time and abuse.
