Yesterday and I was at a local tire shop getting an alignment on my truck. And wouldn't you know it, there was a high end vacuum shop next door. Being a major Tacony fan, I was pleased that they carried simplicity machines. I tried the new symetry s20 up and couldn't believe how powerful it is. The suction at the hose was as powerful as any canister I've used. I believe the salesman said it has over a 100" of water lift. Well, that got me thinking. With that much power, is there really any need for tandem motor machines.

The lower-primary motor is direct air and gives high airflow for effective carpet cleaning. The primary motor also turns the brushroll.when you set the vacuum selector switches for "bare floor" the primary motor is off.It also turns off when you select the hose.I think the salesman is overestimating the suction power of the secondary motor. It is high but doubt its 100".both motors come into play when you use the vacuum for carpet cleaning-and its pretty effective. And don't let the seemingly small bag fool you with both motors the machine packs the bag pretty tight before it needs to be replaced. It holds as much as my Kirby "G" type Filtrete style bag!

I totally understand the concept, and the need on the older riccar models. My rad 10's suction at the hose is pretty lousy when it's extended. The symmetry I looked at was a clean air only model. I think Tom said in an earlier thread that they were close to 100" of w.l.
Don't misunderstand me here, I love my radiance, but if you get a chance to try one of the new clean air models out you'll see what I'm saying. They'll clean just as good as the tandems.

I prefer the clean air machine to the tandem. I would also pick a fan first light weight over a tandem machine. The tandem machine is too much of a compromise to me at a higher price. I don't think the increased complexity of a tandem machine is worthwhile. The suction with tools is weaker, the noise is louder, and dirt is still going through a fan. I would rather see Simplicity/Riccar work on nozzle design improvements than tandem machines.

There are bypass machines that received Excellent scores for carpet cleaning in Consumer Reports testing, so it can be done.

You hit the nail on the head. As far as improving on the nozzle design, I have no complaints. The radiance picks dirt up just As good as any other cleaner I own.

Just my two cents

What i'd like to see is a dual motor system with a motor similar to the simplicity 7 series, a 2nd motor just to run the brushroll, a wide fill tube (think dirt devil ultra mvp), and a carpet/tool selector.

Hey Devin:
Tacony actually makes the machine you describe. I use one in the Museum to clean the vestibule rugs sometimes. It's a clean air motor design with a separate 'power nozzle motor' to turn the brush roller. We make it for the Tenent line. It's awesome. Of course, it's a commercial machine with a 50 foot cord, but the design is the same as the household cleaners.

The clean-air design S20UP (the Ultra Premium) has 92 inches of water lift, as measured on a mechanical gauge. On the assembly lines, they have electronic gauges so it's possible for the Ultra Premium to pull 100. Especially if the brush roller is in the OFF position.
