Hey Guys. Thought I would start a new project. I'm making a list of the various machines that Switson Industries made along with the attachment sets that were used at the time so that, when a machine turns up, we know what parts should be with it.

This is the list I have so far. The attachment sets will be in the pictures to follow.

If you can add any machines to this list or the parts that should be with the machines please do .

Attachment set style 3

New style Rug Nozzle, the rest of the parts are now plastic. Some sets came with the felt pad for hardwood floors

Attachment set style 4

Basically the same as style 3 but the elbow has been removed from the rug nozzle and replaced by a curved wand. The straight wands are shorter. (made using the floor brush rather difficult). Available in grey or tan with the rug nozzle matching the machine.

Attachment set style 5

Delux attachment set featured curved wand, new style rug nozzle, old style floor brush, old style metal small nozzle and plastic dusting brush and crevice tool. Some machines like the watermatic also had the sprayer/sudser, squeegee and felt pad.

Attachment set style 6

The "Cheap" set for the bottom of the line machines. All plastic parts. There were two variations of the floor brush. The one shown and a slightly wider one which I dont have.

Have you ever seen a “Gem” with red trim throughout the machine and attachments, called the “seven”? It had the letters for the word “seven” in cursive on the front of the machine where the word “Gen” would have been.

"Seven"

Yes,and wasn't there also a "Satellite"?As this was the era of Sputnik,Atlas,NASA,Gemini & John Glen did the "Seven" refer to the original group of US astronauts?I think one of these had Fla address on label.

I remember well my Grandma Rose’s “Regina Sanitron”. It had attachment set 4 with grey tools and a cream colour rug nozzle to match the canister. I think the hose was a “Heinz Beans” reddish brown. It came with a cardboard tool carrier which had a place for all attachments - including the clip-on felt shoe for bare floor dusting.

The canister is shown on your website - kind of a turtle shape with only two front wheels and a solid rear dragging foot of some sort.

Hi Garry: Nope Switson never made any Electrolux's. They had their own factories.

Hi Tom: Nope have never seen that one.

Hi Jimmy: I have a picture of a Satelite but no idea what the model number was.

Hi Brian: Sounds like one I have seen but no clue what the model was on that one either

Satellite

I am spending more time at the old shop sorting vacs and found I still have a Satellite in a corner hiding behind a Celebrity,Slimline and Generation handles.Even though most of these need new homes I may keep the Satellite to fill the void in the 'Clean Your Home With Chrome'department left by giving away a Fairfax earlier today.
The label reads---Satellite--U.S.Filtronic--Jacksonville Florida--patent nos. 160183,537413,2605163,2642637--.Also a drawing of a Telstar type satellite in orbit.
Chrome with red bumpers.

Hi Doug,

My grandmother’s Regina Sanitron was very similar to the Viking D151 Trimline but the colour scheme was more like the cream/brown of the Viking D190 you show on your website. The rug nozzle and the front cover of the canister were cream beige though all other attachments were grey. The vinyl hose was brown to match the body of the cleaner. The cardboard carrier was very much like your the one you show with the Viking D129 - two level storage in cream/beige.

It would be great to find a retired worker from Switson who may have catalogues and literature from the 1960’s!

Thanks Doug for doing this - its great to have this resource as there isn't a lot of info out there about these machines. I have a Viking Trimline; model D175. It came with the green matching carpet nozzle, the wands and the hose but that's it. Nice to know what the original pieces were so I can keep my eyes peeled. I use an aftermarket floor nozzle with a longer metal elbow that seems to work good on these because of the extra height.

I've never had any luck finding any paper bags (or even what they looked like) nor have found anything that seems to work in a satisfactory manner. Have you ever found anything that works well with these machines?

I also need to find some new bristles for the carpet brush. Mine are so worn down they hardly do anything on carpet. I thought I might be able to use a replacement strip from a Compact floor brush but it didn't work.

Thanks again for taking the time to document this!

Switson Industries also manufactured and sold Kirby vacuums under license from 1953 to 1965, which covers from models 513 to Sanitronic VII (Switson used different model numbers than the Kirby model numbers we're used to; for example, a model 616 was the Canadian equivalent to our 518).
