Surprised at a Miele hose!!

This past weekend, I was judging a huge competition in King of Prussia. On Sunday, I stopped in at Crate and Barrel, (love that store). I noticed vacuums.. all Meile. The upright had a decent hose, but the canister had a cheap hose, like poool filter. I was amazed that such a high-priced item would have such a cheap hose.
I dated someone years ago. had a Miele.... hose ws falling apart. Just my thoughts/observation.

There WAS a HOOVER Celebrity quadraflex in the 'guest house" in Massachusettes.

I recently picked up a Miele with a power nozzle at a thrift store, and couldn't believe how cheap the hose was. It's a great cleaner, but I wonder how long the hose will last.

The Miele hose is not cheap. It is very tough and durable. Built to last.

I actually love the lightweight non-electrified hose on my Miele S2121. One of the reasons I can't stand a power-nozzle canister is the heaviness and bulkiness of the electrified hoses and handles. I could do hours of dusting and cleaning with my lightweight silver Miele hose and not get tired. When it comes to vacs, I say "keep it simple."

Miele hoses are designed to be light weight and durable. The hoses are tested by lifting wights with them. The crushproof style hose in general holds up far better than wire reinforced hose and do the smoother interior provides better airflow by lack of resistance. As a wire reinforced hose ages the resistance on the airflow goes up do to the " scrunching" of the hose when the vacuum is on. Despite everyone calling crushproof hoses " pool filter " hose they are not by far an are engineered superior.

And some other facts...
Miele's extension SFS hose has wires in them - those ones can damage the hose. It is also a bit heavy when added to the end of the existing 1.8 metre hose. I seldom use mine because of the weight but also because it isn't as well made as Miele's existing, standard hose.

Well, I'm glad to know it's a good hose.

I have just about every specimen of HOOVER hoses and find some better than others.
I was just saying that the hose on the upright (non-power) was more supple. That's all.
For its price, I'm glad it's sturdy. You want a nice hose.

And yet, I've seen more hoses on Mieles only a few years old dried out and cracked. A cracked hose is a worthless hose.

Miele hoses

I would encourage anybody reading this thread who is concerned about the durability of Miele's hoses to search for used Mieles on Ebay, Craigslist, etc. and look at the pictures. You will be hard pressed to find cracked hoses on any of those machines, some of which are 15+ years old.

No vacuum cleaner is indestructible in terms of how it is kept in a home though. I've seen vacuums being stored in cold and damp areas like garages where handles break off because of the temperature from Hoover vacuums to even other parts of flexible plastic becoming brittle.

There's no telling how vacuums are treated in an average home, made worse these days by owners who cant be bothered to wash out the filters on cheaply priced bagless vacs. Being considerate with storage of the appliance adds into the durability of the vacuum cleaner as well.

Not much about Miele is Good quality anymore. The motors are rubbish and burn out quickly, The pipe clips snap in a heart beat, The bodys are made from the same quality plastics that are used on entry level budget machines. It seems to be a German manufacturer thing to do. They all of a sudden drop quality in favour of profits. Mercedes did it and they paid badly, dropping in the JD power owner survey from first to behind kia during the early 2000's ( before Kia became good ) Any one who has owned a early 2000's Sl 500 ( who has owned older and newer mercs since ) can tell you all about the problems that these cars had the Mercs should not have. Miele has done the same thing. They USED to be good very good but now they simply are not.

We see so many in my vacshop. broken to bits. It seems to have started with the s5 and went down hill from their.

Take this customers s5 , Her previous miele lasted years with no work needed and only was replaced when its expensive floor tool and extension wand Failed and i was more cost effective to replace the unit. This is a 2 year old s5 and look what it looks like. Yes the cleaning lady is heavy handed but the last miele lasted 10 years.It was then put to use in the garage for cleaning cars and used like a shop vac. Hence the nice paint job.

The s5 has a blown motor, failed cord winder and its been in for repair a few times in its two year life span.

And yet, whilst I adore old Miele vacs because they are far more durable, they're also a great deal heavier to pull around. I dont miss my old S571 for its heavy weight.

I don't think Miele are to blame for being "flexible" quite literally for fitting thinner plastics, but rather because of the demand that cylinder vacuums are no longer heavy sledges to pull around and of course helped by rivals like Bosch and SEBO whose own products are often lighter to pull around.

I've had a few Bosch cylinder vacs but I find their plastic quality shocking compared to Miele and it seems to me SEBO are generally better than Miele in terms of build quality, lately upping the ante in terms of more durable fittings - their suction only vacuums are now being equipped with all stainless steel tubes from the D series similar to Miele on design but weigh something like 502g compared to 600g with Miele's twin suction tubes - their Triscopic ones are a bit heavier.

I bought a Triscopic set of tubes from Miele quite a few years ago. I like the reach ability but I can't abide the weight. They seldom get used over Miele's standard height adjustable tubes.

I Must say I have never really paid much attention to Cylinder vacuum weight. As its been pulled behind but also is not been constantly moved like a upright its never mattered to me. Thinking about it I would prefer a heavier machine so it pulls more sturdily were as a light unit would bounce everywere.To me Miele has gobe tge same riute as Aeg did years ago. Mainstream. I remember my Mom vuying a Aeg 509 years ago and man that was a expensive vacuun. It was well built solid machine. Now days They are on par with others like LG and samsung. I agree with you about the wands, but then did you ever see those bend or dent like others

Thats odd that you have more trouble with the newer Vortex motors, they've actually been the more reliable of the 3 motors they used in machines sold in the US market, I suspect that the difference may be in the 240V motors you guys get. I think they are still well made machines, I think Sebo makes a machine thats built tougher though. When I have a customer that I know is hard on a machine I always go to a Sebo.
