Surgeon needs help mid tranpsplant please!

My donor power nozzle for the Celebrity came, but I am having trouble installing it. I'm trying to take the old one apart, but it isn't going very well. I had a lot of trouble getting the bare floor pedal and cord gromet off. But now, I can't get the cord holder off because of some stupid wire nuts! I've never seen any such as this... they are on tight... I can't twist them off, nor can I pull them off with pliers. Anyone have any ideas? Fate chose the wrong passion (vacuum cleaners) for someone as mechanically inept as me!

The nuts are factory crimped. Squeeze the crimp several times on opposite sides into a 'rounder' tube with vicegrips (for the lever action that multiplies your control over jaw pressure) and you'll be able to pull the wires out. Replace with more sensible home consumer threaded nuts. Available in several sizes at Home Depot, etc, I'd use the small gray size for a positive lock unless there are 3 wires to gang together in which case go to the next blue size. Note that the wire gauge (thickness) is much narrower than lamp cord or house wiring, thus small nuts. Good luck, Bobby, tho you won't need it. Just patience and and it's a slamdunk.

Fate did not choose the wrong passion Bobby, I have been tinkering with vacuums and anything else thet comes apart sence I could grip a screwdriver and Im still learning.Like Dave said Patience. Once you get thru this one the next one will be a snap. Also I tend to cut those nuts off of Hoovers as close to the wire end as I can then like Dave replace with blue or gray wire nuts .

...those are the crimp type. In order to get as much wire length out of them as possible, I usually split them with a Dremel tool.

Replacements can either be the threaded type caps, or the inline crimp type. If space and part movement is an issue, I use inline crimp type. If not, or there is more than two wires, the cap type are chosen.

Thanks guys... I finally got it just as Dave suggested. I used pliers (my vise grip is rusted shut... I'm so not a man) and just squished it open and then pulled it off. I went to Lowe's and bought yellow screw on wire nuts. Much easier to work with. After work tonight, I finished the transplant. Took about an hour (though I was on the phone at the same time). It went OK... the cord gromet gave me fits again (anyone have any tips on getting those out quickly?) and so did the bare floor pedal. I got the entire thing back together and then realized then realized that I had forgotten to use the wire nuts and I had 6 loose wire ends inside the power nozzle just flapping in the wind so had to unscrew it and connect them. I haven't tried it out yet, because it was 1 AM when I finished.

I do have some questions though. The wand for the power nozzle leans forward when I put it in the upright positioin... is that normal, or should it be at a perfect 90 degree angle? Maybe I didn't put something back right or screw something tight enough. Also, there's a bit of rust on the upper extension wand. I tried still wool, but could not get it off. Anyone have any suggestions?

Ken... I can use the box the new one came in to send you my old base and the cover and neck for the new one of you still want it and think you can use it. Do you want me to include two of the yellow wire nuts I got (I had to buy a bag of 25, they don't sell them individually) since I had to ruin the originals? I don't know if I can find the screws for the original one... it's been so long since it broke. I'd like to put it back together partially, but I'm too frustrated to try that again and I might break it more if I try. You seem more mechanically inclined than me anyway. I'll put all the extra parts (bare floor pedal and spring and screws if I can find them) in a ziploc bag. Just let me know...

OMG after working all night and shopping and gardening,I sit down with my dinner and read Do you want me to include two of the yellow wire nuts they don't sell them individually,I almost choked on my food.Sorry the mind kinda goes to the gutter after being tired.Bobby youre so a MAN if you want to send me your two nuts Ill take em If not I got two of my own lol. OK sorry guys.Seriously tho I have some around and as far as the wand leaning forward this id normal for Hoover they all do,and the cord Gromet what I do to get those suckers out is from the inside squeeze the smaller section and bigger section together with needle nose and push out, careful of your other hand. Call me if you need any help if you see this. I should still be up for about an hr. and i wake up about 9pm 401-996-1948.

Well, I guess I said a few things in that thread that could have been taken a few different ways. That's what happens when I type a post at 4 in the morning... especially when my attention is divided between the computer, the Green Acres episode I have on in the back ground, the cat begging for attention and the bowl of cold leftover Chinese food I was snacking on!

I got it together and it works, but I used the new cord with old power nozzle and was too short so I had to open it back up AGAIN and swap out the cords. I hadn't used the machine in so long that the dirt in it had fermented (animal hair you know) so it smelled awful... I changed the the bag and when I did, the motor filter fell apart when I touched it! I had to buy more bags and a new filter and belt on the 'bay. The machine is a lot louder than I remembered it to be... can't believe it is called the quiet series! I've gotta baby it now because I'm aware of how fragile it is. Glad to have it back in operation though! Thanks again Fred for helping me find this nozzle.
