I happened to recently inquire about canister vacuum cleaners at a local thrift store, and the service tech said they had just discarded one. It turned out to be an aqua Model G with broken off back wheels and some surface rust. There was also an ivory and tan PN-1 with a teal sheathed wand and a Golden J PN-2--the cords of which had either been removed or cut off. So I left my name and contact information and asked the man to let me know when they have more discards--something for you to think about doing at your local thrift stores. You may even consider volunteering to repair vacuum cleaners for them. Wish I had the know-how, or I would.

Anyway, is there an effective way to remove what appears to be surface rust without damaging the paint, or can you recommend any good rust-removal products?

Wax

Ok good! I thought I was the only weird guy in the world that polished his vacuums with car wax and monthly polishes with Amour all .. Haha

aluminum foil and Coke

use the foil as a rag and coke as the cleaner.
Works like a charm, especially on chromed stuff.
