What do you do? Well, I use a formaldehyde tablet. We cosmetologists here in Az are required to use a fumigant sterilizer to keep our implements sterile. So I suck up one of those tablets, and POOF, LEAVE the room. Then the bag smels like mint and never smels bad again. Kills everything organic.....Bill in Az.....

Well formaldehyde is a very strong respiratory irritant to a lot of allergy sufferers! I don't know that the best way to take care of a stinky bag is to mask it.

My solution: Pitch it! Bags are cheap! (Unless it's a Miele....)

Are you sure you want to use
formaldehyde?that stuff is TOXIC!And the odor of it is very bad.Remember that stuff is used to preserve bodies for burial.Just what sort of bag is it-if disposable-replace it.If cloth reusable-the best bet is replace it if you can.Or you can try to use "Filtrete" or similar bags-they do cut down the odors better than paper bags.I have had to replace a few "stinky" Kirby outer bags-used by a smoker.Just make sure you have strong hands to stretch the new bag opening over the Sani-emptor's bag opening.and I had to wash the fans and fan housings of those machines-unpleasent job.The tobacco residue is NASTY!

Formaldehyde

You are right, Eric. When I worked at Green Acres cemetery and mortuary a bottle of 50 index cavity solution fell off the shelf and broke, OMG, THAT SMELL!!! I passed out for 1 min. Imagine that, me in a suit, on the floor. Lovely!!! My friend Ellen, Master Embalmer and mortuary science instructor had a miscarraige from that spill, she thinks.....Bill in Az....

Bag Washing

What type of bag stinks? I am getting ready to wash some fabric Kirby Bags with Woolite and little fabric softner. There is a thread about it I will see if I can dig it up. The woolite is easy on the bag and the fabric softner helps the fibers stay soft and apart for better filtering.

Kirby Bags...

I've always found the Kirby bags to be pretty darn tough. Unless it's in relatively fragile condition, I've always just used my normal laundry detergent with no ill effects. The fabric softener DOES help. It leaves a fresh scent, but it makes the fibers in the cloth "fluff" which definitely helps with filtering. With the good bags I've washed this way, you can smack them while the machine is running and get no puff of dirt. Pretty good for a cloth bag!

Bill,

I recently got a turquoise Hoover Dial-A-Matic model U6039-030 in beautiful condition, only problem is someone vacuumed up wet dog hair and it would seem as if the bag exploded inside the machine. I tried washing the inside of the bag chamber and the red pre-motor filter, but even with carpet fresh (much as I hate using that stuff) I can't seem to get rid of that horrible doggy smell. So now, it smells like fresh gardenia with doggy odor mixed in. Do you think this formaldehyde tablet would work? I guess the only place I could get it from is a funeral home....

Hey, there. Yes it will work. I buy them at Sally Beauty Supply. It's called "Steri-Dry Fumigant" . I'll send you some if you can't find it. You also can order it online from Sally. Let me know.....Bill in Az....

If the vacuum smells even after you cleaned out the bag chamber, you really need to pull it apart and remove the source of the smell. The vacuum still stinks because the motor and the air ducts are still full of dirt and animal dander. Masking the smell will do just that...mask the smell. Over time the dirt will continue to rot and decompose and eventually harbor mold and mildew. A stinky vac is one that needs attention.......not a quick cover-up!

Eric I hate to disagree with you but...

Miele HyClean dust bags are not all that expensive. A pack of the HyClean dust bags are 4 bags to a pack. The best thing are these bags are 9 layers. Since there are so many layers compared to Kirby they are much thicker. Even though the Kirby Bags are bigger they Rib Cage is specially designed to maintain suction while cleaning. The Kirby bags are 6 for 30 at my distributor. The Hyclean bags are 16 for 4. Though they are cheaper the HyClean gives you close to HEPA filtration so the Hepa filter honestly only needs to be replaced once every few years. You will find that in a Kirby there is nothing to stop odors unlike in the Miele where you have the active HEPA filter. That way the bag never does smell because there are truly no odors. Again that's just my opinion.

I just don't see how $18 for a 4 pack of bags is a good price. Considering it's a disposable sack you're gonna toss in the trash, it seems like an awfully expensive maintenance item.

Bags for the Kirby are about $18 for 18 bags of the Micron Magic or MM Hepa bags. I never use the cloth bags because I don't see the need. The cheaper bags do the job I need and I can afford to toss them out more often.

I just recently bought 60 bags for my TriStar for $45. They're envirocare bags, and they do NOT leak. The TriStar with it's HEPA after filter and the decent electrostatic bags filters just as good as the Miele at less than a fraction of the cost.

I don't deny the Miele filters well and cleans well. It's just so expensive. Having a dog, I like to change the bag at least once a week. With the Miele that would be about $20 a month just on bags!

The Kirby cloth bags are just the most ridiculously overpriced bag I've seen yet though. They may be terrific for airflow and suction support, but holy cow! IDK, I just prefer a reasonably priced bag. After all, you literally are throwing money away!

I wonder if any sort of washing would remove the horrible tobacco smell in those Kirbys I had years ago-was just easier to get new cloth bags for them.Just the new bag nade a big diffrence-the fan and fan housing cleaning killed the rest of the tobacco smell. Was pretty gross. From now on I pass up vacuums used by smokers.Just too much work to destink them.
I got some Meile "HyClean" bags with my S7 upright.they do work exceptionally well-and no residue whatsover in the bag chamber. An improved version of the thick Air Way bags-reminds me of the Air Way bags.Would like to try the HyCleans in my Meile canisters.Since I don't have any dogs-the Filtrete bags work super for me both in my Meiles and Kirbys. They last me on average a couple of months and no bad smells.A pack of the Kirby Filtrete bags lasts me a year.Same with a pack of Meile Filtrete bags for the canisters.I would hate to have to change bags every week.Is the dog that much of an odor problem?I have known other dog owners that don't have to change their vacuum bags that often.

It's not the dog that's the odor problem. She's a long haired breed so she's got none of the lanolin that makes dogs "smell". It's the dirt she brings in from the yard. We had the driest 18 month span on record that ended in March, and the yard got severely drought-burned last year. It's still slowly recovering, but in the mean time, the dirt, grass, and filth clings to her fur and gets deposited around the house.

For whatever reason, I'm particularly sensitive to the "dirt smell" after a vacuum has sat with dirt in the bag for any period of time. After about a week or two, I can smell it regardless of the type of bag. I just keep the bag changed about every week or two to keep the smell at bay. It's not a dog smell, it's just a "dirty" smell if that makes any sense.

Good to find out its wasn't the dog that smelled up the bags-but what she tracked in on her hair.Yes,the dirt smell can be offensive. In that case all you can do is use the cheapest vacuum bags until the grass grows back again in the dogs yard.

When my mother had the Hoover 612 in the 1970s, she used to hoover up a small wad of cotton wool, dabbed with Shulton's 'Old Spice' aftershave.

This had the added benefit of using up some of dad's unused Christmas pressies! He never used the aftershave.
