Stick vacuum needed....any suggestions?

Hey Vacuumlanders. I have a friend who just moved into a brand new apartment about a week ago, & want to get her a housewarming gift. She already has a Bissell Powerforce canister vacuum, so she doesn't need a full size vacuum. But the place she moved into has ALL hardwood floors. She is meticulous about keeping them clean....when I came in today, she was right behind me with the pad mop getting my wet snowprints off the floor . She normally uses a broom for sweeping, but I am thinking with how meticulous she is & how much hardwood flooring there is, it might be wise to surprise her with a stick vacuum. I know she would never consider adding a horsehair floor brush & using the canister vacuum full time, she would consider that too much of a hassle & save it for the furniture.

Here are the requirements:

-Must be low cost, preferably no more than $150 CDN

-Must use a reusable pad if it uses one at all, NOT a disposable pad like a Swiffer SweeperVac. This person is low income & could use the money spent on the pads on caring for her kids.

-Must be cordless. This is a absolute MUST HAVE feature, she would NOT want to constantly plug & unplug & wrap a cord just to sweep her floors.

-Must have a reusable dust cup filter that can be cleaned easily. If replacement is required occasionally, replacement filters must be low cost.

So....any good suggestions out there?

The hoover linx platinum stick is good. It doesn't use pads but it cleans bare floors well, it also does very well on carpeting too. The only rechargeable vax that would accept reusable cloths is a swifter vac, but I'm not sure if they're made anymore. Never used one so I can't comment on the power.

Rob...the Swiffer Vac is ideal. If she can't afford the disposable pads, she can always place a rag or a used towel on the Swiffer and throw it in the wash once a week. Swiffer pads attach to the device by 4 plastic squeeze holes with pie shaped grabbers. Any rag can easily be pushed into the 4 holes to attach to the Swiffer Vac.

If you don't mind a corded vac, Walmart Canada is now selling a $50 Dirt Devil stick vac with washable floor mop pad. Just add a nice long extension cord and this will be ideal.

I have the Hoover Lynx cordless and we love it. My sister loved it so much she even bought one for her apartment even though she already has a regular Electrolux tank, and she really couldn't care less about vacuums. The Lynx is great for quick pick ups and bare floors and its revolving brush does clean small messes on rugs very well. It's also not very loud, lasts a good amount of time on one charge, and the battery recharges in about 3-4 hours. It's also easy to empty and maintain. I'd highly recommend one!

Do you own the Swiffer Vac? Just wondering, what is the runtime for it before the battery dies?

Just checked out the Dirt Devil on Walmart.ca & the Dirtdevil.com website....looks like the cordless version gets a bad rap! On reviews for both of them on Walmart.ca, both people are claiming short battery life, & there's one review on the Dirtdevil.com website that says the battery life is only 10 minutes . And I know my friend Lisa would probably never use it if it required a cord & plug it in every time.

I am also not exactly thrilled it is a Dirt Devil, & is made by TTI. After my experience with my Hoover Air Pro upright, being the crappy piece of Chinese-made garbage it is, I definitely want to avoid giving TTI any future business!

Now if only Miele made the S1 stickvac cordless & a little bit cheaper....that would be terrific for her!

Tayyab, that's a good idea. But will NOT be buying off Ebay....too many scammers on there selling junk & ripping people off. But I will look into Dyson's website & see if they offer it as a refurb there.

Hi Rob,

My 87-year-old mother has owned a Swiffer-Vac for the last 8 years and swears by it. I have never really timed the battery charge, but I would say it could run for 10 minutes on a charge. Like any rechargeable device, it's not a bad idea to run it down to zero and give it a full overnight recharge to refresh the battery. Mom uses it daily for a quick 5-10 minute run through her kitchen, hallway and bathroom. It's extremely easy to use and very effective. The cleaning lady empties the dust cup weekly and vacuums the filter with Mom's canister vac.

Thanks for the feedback, Brian. Looks like the corded Dirt Devil you suggested is going to work best in this situation then. The apartment itself is HUGE, & not only that, but it's all hardwood....even the bedrooms. I highly doubt she could do the entire apartment on a 10 minute charge. Plus I do like that the pad is thick & substantial, & isn't a homemade solution either for that matter. I will go out tonight & grab one at Walmart while they still have them in stock.

You're welcome Ron!

Just add a nice 30 foot extension cord to your gift and I'm sure that corded Dirt Devil Vac+Mop will really do the trick. The ends of the mop are flexible and can go completely vertical to wipe baseboards!

I can wouch for the corded Dirt Devil vac plus dust, since instaling hard floors in the majority of the house it has become one of my go to machines. The suction is perfectly adequate, the motor not too loud, the dust cup is a bit bigger than the swiffer, build quality seems fine and fairly solid, there are no batteries or disposable cloths to worry about, plus it's cheaper than the swiffer! (at least here anyway)


 


All of that combined with the fact that it does a very good job, and for me acts as a substitute for dragging out a canister.
