Really surprised at how poorly one machine in particular did..

I do vacuum tests like that all of the time, but the first time I did a vacuum test I used pepper so my carpet smelled very bad for months!

Did the same thing but with Arm & Hammer Pet Fresh Powder... Gave me the WORST migraine headache ever...

I'm actually quite impressed how well the cheap Eureka Quick Up did! It seemed to have done better than the Oreck!

According to Consumer Reports (which did not test the Dyson, Hoover or Oreck that was in this video), the best cordless stick vac believe it or not, is the Black and Decker Pivot Vac.....did great on carpets, floors and even edges!

Happy with my LiNX ! It gets used a lot around here, thought it would have done better on the sand to be honest.Dyson shocked me.

I too was surprised at the Eureka! It preformed pretty good for a 6volt battery. The Dyson was shocking. $300 for that preformance? No way! That pretty much convinced me not to buy it. I wasn't too surprised at the oreck or hoover, I've used both and that's pretty much what I expected.

I knew the Hoover would do well and the Oreck would do terrible, so that part was expected, but the awful performance of the Dyson and the pretty good performance of the Eureka surprised me. They guy did a pretty good job with the comparison, but I don't think he was fair to the Dyson, if it has a smaller capacity, he should have emptied it, no machine can perform with an overstuffed bin like that... the other machines weren't stuffed, so it really wasn't a fair comparison.... he really went over the max line and then kept going.

Of course the Hoover was the best because it was a true dedicated stick vac, the others were all hand vacs with a pole...

One more thing about the Dyson

The Dyson has two speeds. (I don't know if the others do or not.) If I were going to use a machine like that to vacuum sand from a carpet, I would use the high speed.

I also agree about emptying the machine. The cup has a maximum fill line on it, and to stuff the machine completely full and continue to use it because the others didn't require emptying demonstrates only that the machine's capacity is lower, not its performance after its capacity is vastly exceeded.

I was impressed by the Dyson when I saw the "official" demo video.  It seemed to work admirably.  I wonder if the poorer performance on the sand in this test was at least partly due to the deeper plush carpeting, rather than a more typical (in the UK) tightly-napped, low pile.

Well, most people in the US have thick carpeting! Vacuum manufactuers are aware of this and need to make machines that can handle it. Hoover really nailed that with their linx. Eureka didn't do that bad either. And I don't think the Dyson was doing that well anyway. It barely got sand, took a LOT of passes to get the second row of dirt, and before it filled up (which shows you how incredibly small the bin is) took a lot of passes for pet hair! And even if the bin was empty I don't think it would have edge-cleaned well. I like Dyson, just not this particular machine.

I think another factor in the poor performance of the Dyson is that this unit actually has an air-driven turbo nozzle, whereas all 3 other vacs shown in the video have brushrolls that are driven by a small motor. That could be another important factor in the relative ability of the Dyson to clean a plush carpet.

Thanks for that correction Floyd - I guess there are electrical wires going down the wand to power the Dyson's nozzle. Did not know that....
