Stick vac advice

Hey all,

I'm just looking for a little advice/feedback regarding a thrift store stick vacuum.
The local Goodwill has a blue Hoover Quik Broom, probably late 80s vintage, for $10.99.
It's surface dirty all over, but light dirt. I think it would clean up nice.
The bigger issue is that it's missing its dirt/dust cup.

I walked away from it last weekend, but I keep thinking about it.
I know stick vacs aren't powerful cleaners.
I'm thinking for when I've just vacuumed the house, and "someone", who shall remain nameless, drags in dirt or small leaves or something from outside. Very light stuff.
Plus, everyone who I remember from my youth had a stick vac of some sort.
Mom had a Hoover Lark or two.
My grandmother had a Regina. Just to give a couple of examples.
In my quest to remain stuck in the past, I'd like for there to be a little stick vacuum in our house.
I know I could just use our Oreck.
It probably doesn't weigh much more, and it would pick up better.
But it's not the same.

So, I guess what I'm wondering is if you would advise buying THIS specific one.
In the world of stick vacuums; how is the Hoover Quik Broom?
And, what do you think the chances are that I'd ever find a replacement dirt cup for it?

finding major missing sub assemblies from vintage vacuums is extremely difficult unless you come across the exact same model again, or pilfer thru junk/trade in rooms at vacuum shops. speaking from experience of someone who gets parts whereever i can find them, something essential to a machine, like in this case, or an outer bag and bellow for a convertible, hose for a canister. arent easy inherhently to find on thier own. other collectors may have parts, but finding an exact part for that color specific model wont be easy. if you want mis matching parts it may be easier.

First thing, look around the area the vacuum is in for the part. It might have fallen off and got placed somewhere else. Last time I seen a Hoover stick vac in my Goodwill, the vacuum was leaning on an artificial tree in the furniture aisle, and the dirt cup with the sweeper head was 3 aisles over in the plastic drink cups and dishes aisle. I didn't want it but I was nice enough to put it back on the vacuum. If the part can't be found, and you really want it, ask them if they will mark it down and explain its missing the cup.

But the people on this site are good at sourcing parts, and you might get lucky and find someone here that has the cup or knows where they can get one. I mean, a member here found me a pair of tiny little handle screws for my 90 year old Hoover 700 that are smaller than the tip of a pen and just happened to have them handy. Those are very hard to find I am sure and it was an amazingly lucky find that he was generous enough to sell them to me.

Stick vacs are common in thrift stores so if you go often enough you will see a lot of them, mostly Dirt Devils.

I suggest looking at the Miele. It might be more than you want to spend, and it isn't vintage. However, it's the best stick vac I've ever used. Since you're in the US, the new model sold here is able to use power nozzles. Miele also makes a hose kit. I think the vacuum is a great value at $199 new, but not everyone agrees, so do some research.

That's a good idea.
I did look around the store a bit, but not after spotting the vacuum.
I should make a return trip this weekend and see if it's still there, and if I can find the cup somewhere silly.

I would imagine that the Miele is probably a good machine.
I haven't really seen too many negative things posted about the brand in general.
But, as I think you suspected, vintage is a must for me.

I might just end up buying the thing, even if it's sans cup, and hoping that I can locate one somehow.
Like you said, Husky, maybe one of the kind folks on this site could even come up with one!

I have a Dirt Devil versa power stick vac I bought on Amazon for like 20 shipped. I wanted it for quick touch ups and it was dirt cheap. I thought it was overheating so I quit using it but I recently dug it back out and it seems to run fine. I've been using it to clean up the bird crumbs my parrot throws all over his vynil entryway he lives in. Works well for that and seems to be able to pick up bigger seeds and chunks as long as the nozzle doesn't plug up. My cordless just can't handle the heavy amount of seed and crumbs and I hate filling bags full of seeds to toss out. Amazon still sells them new for around 20 bucks today.

Stick vac

I had all the old ones,Regina,Hoover,GE,even Sunbeam. None of them lasted. I bought a hoover like you are looking at at an estate sale. I tried it there and it ran well. Brought it home somehow it would pick up the dirt and then send it flying across the room through the motor vents.

After buying used ones I finally broke down and bought a new one on line. It seems to only be on line. It's a hoover cyclonic bagless corded. I think I paid about 60 at Amazon. It's funny, Hoover doesn't even show it at their sight. It works great. It has a brush roll that can be shut off for doing hard floors. I just leave it on all the time. I have had it about 5 years, and it still works perfect.
