Sterilizing Vac Attachments/Handles?

Whats the best way to sterilize vacuum handles and attachments? I want to start doing this when i buy vacuums at thrift shops. So whats the best way?

There are several ways to do this. I prefer to soak and then wash all plastic and washable parts in warm soapy water,with a little clorine bleach added, then rinse in clear water, and dry with a towel. Also like to put attachments and the like thru the dishwasher if possible. As for handle grips, handles and the like,,,In an empty spray bottle, Mix up a diluted solution of water, dishwashing liquid, and clorine bleach (like 7 or 8 parts water, 1 part clorine bleach, and a small amount of dishwashing liquid. Shake lightly to mix, then Spray the surface well, let sit for a few min, and wipe down with a damp cloth. Old towels work great for this,also any linen cloth is excellent,as it wont leave any lint or fuzz. Ive put many Kirby plastic and metal attachments and brushes thru the dishwasher (not using extremely HOT water) with no problems. Also have found that Dawn dishwashing liquid (any scent or kind) is excellent for degreasing, and getting off really stuck on old grease and grime.

Forgot to say, another excellent degreaser and all around cleaner is good old Proctor and Gamble's Mr. Clean. Like the old jingle says, "Mr. Clean gets rid of dirt and grime and grease in just a minute, Mr. Clean will clean your whole house, and anything thats in it!"
I once restored (just by cleaning it up) and old Kirby 500 series that i found in the trash after an estate sale,,no one wanted it so whoever just set it out at the curb with the trash,,there was absolutely nothing wrong with the machine at all, except it had been sitting in someone's attack or basement for years, and was covered in dirt and grime, and i mean COVERED,,was at least 2 inches THICK.
I mixed up a solution of water and Mr Clean in a spray bottle, got some old towels and went to work. I sent the carpet nozzle and brush thru the dishwasher, and the bag thru the washing machine on slow with cold water,and Mr Clean.
Sprayed down all the surfaces with the Mr Clean solution, wiped it all off,,and it was beautiful. Of course the metal needed polishing, but at least i got rid of every speck of grime, grease and dirt. The whole machine even smelled clean afterwards. Sure enough, Mr. Clean cleans anything.

Thanks! Im going to try to put some attachments theu the dishwasher today. Say, the attachments that have the hoover logos printed on them, would it ruin them if i put them thru the washer?

No,you should be fine,, just DONT use the SUPER, or SANI CLEAN wash setting, or the HEAT DRY,,just the Gentle Wash is fine. Use the regular automatic dishwasher detergent like you normally do.

I dismantle the whole machine (even the cord) and throw it in an old dishwasher I have, and it gives great results.

I've never had one damaged this way and it really makes it like new.

I like to...

rub the part in question on a patch of bare skin on my arm and see if any unusual rashes or welts appear (see pic). If so, only then do i give it a good wipe down with a used kleenex which i keep on hand for this purpose.
