Steam floor cleaners

I'd like to hear y'all's recommendations for a steam floor cleaner. The house is eight years old and I'm feeling that the floors are not as clean as I'd like them to be despite the cleaning ladies' efforts.
I've got hardwood floors throughout and, according to the contractor it has "four coats of polyurethane."
I'm an ORECK fan, so they are my first choice. However, there may be better choices.

I have 2 cats and a 140 year old house.

I have a HOOVER floor steamer.  It's great.  You can put the little "pan" on it and steam carpets AND mattresses. You can use plain water OR HOOVER solution.   Got mine for only $69.00 THey sell for over $100.00   Best of luck.


    The other day, in a thrift store in Philly suburbs,  I saw an ORECK "steamer" (for carpets,  not hard floors)  for $45.00


 It's been there for 3 weeks now.  Poor lonely little thing.

I have a H20 Steam mop X5 from thane direct, it does the job brilliantly, and it would be ideal for wood floors, as you can adjust the heat of the steam.
It doesn't use chemicals, just tap water.
But if you decide to buy one, make sure it's from thane.com as their are a lot of fakes on eBay and Amazon. I put a link to it.

Considering You Are an Oreck Fan

Why not check out the Orbiter? I had a Monster Steam mop for awhile, but there was hardly any advantage to using it over a sponge mop other than no chemicals were needed. You still have to make multiple passes over stains and once the pad gets dirty cleaning can get difficult. The Orbiter is amazing. Our laminate feels like new after each cleaning when used with Bruce chemicals. It truly is the ultimate consumer floor cleaning machine. Add the extra benefits of dry carpet cleaning abilities and the great warranty, a steam mop looks like a toy compared to the Orbiter.

Sorry to disagree with every one how like their steam map, but of the 3 I have tried they just do not work my e-mop does a much better job. AS other have said above An ORECK Orbiter is fantastic or so is a Fakir 3 brush suction polisher if you have them in the US

Skip the steam mop go for a hoover floormate, i have a haan steamer and used a few others but i feel they don't really trap the dirt too well and that you may be smearing it around without knowing it. I feel the floormate though bulkier does a better job due to it putting down clean water then sucking it up.

I feel just the opposite about the Hoover Floormate... different strokes for different folks, but I have barely touched mine since I got the Haan. It is loud and you have to empty the dirty water and to get any serious dirt up you have to go super slow and make numerous passes... The steam mop is silent (the Haan is anyway, the Sharks hiss like a den of snakes), and I can throw the pad in the washer and don't have to empty dirty water... if getting one pad dirty in one cleaning session is a concern, buy multiple pads. I have two and having and extra one is really handy. If there is serious dirt on the floor, you can leave the steam mop over it for a little while and let the steam work on the dirt without all the loud drama of the Floormate... plus the dry vacuum ability of the Floormate is virtually non-existent. It has come in handy when I've overfilled the sink a few times and had water cascading down the counter, but honestly, the steam vac works just as well for that and has a much larger capacity.

The only way to know for sure is to try it for yourself!

to spend 69 ¢ on a gallon of distilled water instead of using tap water in these steam machines? That's what I do

I had the shark steam mop and returned it. It left my floors looking very dull after each cleaning. I did not like that. I have wondered if all the steam cleaners would have the same result.
