STAN KANNS VACUUMS FOR SALE!!!

That's just disgusting. I didn't ever know him personally, but it seems like this is just such a terrible way for such a fantastic collection to end up. Some of those machines belonged in a museum.....not being sold by one!

Ugh...

Brandon, when I first saw your post and followed the link...I honestly had to step away from the computer and take a walk. Eric, I feel the same way you do. Like you, Brandon, I wish I had the money.

However, St. Louis Car Museum is a pretty upscale outfit. And with the starting bid and Buy It Now price, if it goes, it's not going to go to some schmuck running an eBay biz out of his garage, selling pots, pans, last years shirts, cheap ceramics picked up from garage sales and the occasional old vacuum cleaner. At least we can hope...

John

Well..........how about this!!!!!!!!

Not that my opinion matters at all but.........why don't we start a fund collection.... Everyone on Vacuumland and the VCCC start a collection and we will buy the damn machines!!!! They will be owned by the club and we could ship around the country and do a kind of traveling exhibit with them. We could also chip in some other machines from our own collections and I think we could have a pretty cool thing. I mean there are over 300 members on Vacuumland alone so that would be around what $75 a person.....not to mention the VCCC.......something maybe to think about?

Eric remember half those machines we see will be in a museum. Since Tom Gasko is opening up the Riccar vacuums historic center most of the machines we see will be there. Stan gave alot of cleaners to Tom before he passed away. No worries there will be a place will all vacuums to preserve the heritage.

Good Idea

I like the collection fund Idea. It would ensure that the vacs go into good hands.

Not that any regular ebayer will want to spend $22,000 on vacuums

I agree with Eric. Thats just plain disgusting. I very much doubt that Stan would have left the machines or his car to them had he known that all they would do is auction them off instead of displaying them properly. As far as I'm concerned that is a total betrayal of the trust placed in them on the museums part.

This really is blasphemy! I thought these sweepers were going to someone who would cherish the collection. I had really hoped that Charlie Lester would have obtained his machines. I'm sure Stan had more cleaners than this when he passed. This museum will probably have another auction or two like this. They should be ashamed of themselves!

Slow down a bit...

...the St. Louis Car Museum may not have been the buyer at the estate, but may be acting simply as the auctioneer. Like I said, they're pretty upscale and have a following. I don't fault the St. Louis Car Museum on this.

I *DO* like Dave's idea of an acquisition fund. I'd kick in, most certainly. Yes, there's a lot of banter and jest on these boards -- but we *DO* take these machines pretty seriously. If we had some time of acquisition fun like Dirfinder1/Dave proposes, we wouldn't have to sit on the sidelines watching things like this go by.

For SHAME.

I'm appalled and can only view this reprehensible situation one thing at a time and try not to overreact. I wish I had the resources to send a probate judge down to The St Louis Car Museum to examine the will's terms concerning Stan's bequest. Where are the Fox Theatre Organ's building owners in all of this? Someone in St Louis please alert the St Louis Beacon paper and KSDA Channel 5 television station, both of whom did big stories on Stan, to do a story and get some answers.

Let's assist proactively to give this 'Museum' all the negative publicity they deserve.

Let's say there are 75 machines. That's $305 apiece at Buy It Now. 75 at opening bid works out to $233. That's before the cost of renting a truck to haul 'em wherever they might go. Admittedly there are mostly highly desirable vacuum sweepers pictured here. If I were in a position to bid on such a large job lot I would expect a massive per-item discount. I'll be surprised if they get any bids at all.

Surely such an impressive organization that auctions off automobiles at inflated prices has the facility to auction these one at a time. Something fishy is afoot.

On a positive note, there are examples of Stan's Collection in other collections among VCCC members and others that will always be freely viewable.

Re: Slow down a bit

Ok John - my question in that case would have to be What buisness does a museum have acting as an auctioneer in the first place???? The two are mutually exclusive positions. I have been a member of one of our museums here for 10 years and served a term as president as well. I dont know what rules that museum operates under but were we to try to auction off anything that wasnt specifically given to us for the purpose of an auction we would be shut down. If Stans intent was to have these auctioned off it should have been clearly stated as such in the listing, which seems to say everything BUT why they are doing this.

Doug

This is NOT a Museum, it is a Classic car Dealership business. Nowhere on their brief website is there mention of an open to the public static display. You have to make an appointment to view the cars which are all for sale. Being an upscale Collector Car Store what are the vacuums doing in their care in the first place?

Does the current 'owner/recipient' of Stan's vacuums not realize he was a longstanding figurehead in a not insignificant Hobby from which decent profit could be realized by listing these items individually on Ebay?

Did Stan have a partner or is this Family at work?

Whose choice is this absurd liquidation option?

If Stan did in fact leave the car to someone who has now decided to auction it off why are the vacuums included?

Perhaps Stan left no will and the Lawyers in charge are anxious to rid themselves of his effects without much effort.

All speculation until some answers are unearthed. It all still sounds mighty shifty to me...

Ok...

Ok John - my question in that case would have to be What buisness does a museum have acting as an auctioneer in the first place????

I honestly cannot answer that one. Yes, it is a dealership, yes it is a car museum. I have been there. They do automotive restoration work, customizing, etc. In fact, a friend of mine, his sister had a Chevrolet Impala off-frame restored by these people. It cost quite a penny. They also have static displays of vehicles restored to original condition.

Maybe one of you would like to call them at the number they gave in order to get the details.

Cleary, this discussion is moving to the "heated" side, so I am going to step out of it. It is understandable why it would get heated, and why people feel the way I do. I'm saddened to see these wonderful pieces of domestic history auctioned off on eBay as well. But I don't have all the facts either.

John

from what I was told.......

I talked to John Pease and he told me that the man who purchased Stan's Lincoln purchased the vacuums because he thought that they were "interesting".....so perhaps the gentleman who purchased the car and vacuums has run into a rough spot with money (I know in this economy who would ever guess such a thing happening..........). Therefore, he probably has inlisted the St. Louis Car Museum to help sell the car and probably as a favor they are helping to sell the vacuums. I doubt there was any type of malicious reason behind any of this other then the owner probably needs money badly.

Hey John:

Sorry - I didnt intend it to sound heated. If this is the case and someone has bought them from the estate fine. Being directly involved with museums it just irked me when it sounded like it was a museum doing something underhanded. (And yes it still rubs me the wrong way for an auction house to hide behind a museum name)

My appologies
Doug

David,

You are correct, that is what happened. They were purchased from the estate and not given to the museum. As was stated in the original post, Stan did not have a will so they had to be sold to settle the estate.

I am not sure, nor do I care what his reasons are for selling them. Truly it is none of our business! What is important for all of us to remember is that if we truly don't want our vacuums sold, thrown out, or given away we should include them in our will.

It is clear by the auction that there is no dis-respect for Stan. It was his choice once purchased, to do with them what he chooses.

I had no idea that Stan had passed away. So sad.

That's so sad. Heart surgery is a very common yet still dangerous procedure these days. I know....my dad had open heart surgery in the summer of 2007 and was infected with Multidrug Resistant Staph bacteria while in hospital. He required an even longer re-operation on his heart valve and never survived the second surgery. He was 82.

It would be wonderful if some wealthy philanthropist could put up the money for a real, permanent vac museum in the USA. But I guess in our bad economic situation, it's better to feed the hungry and house the homeless than find a good retirement home for our beloved vacs. So this Vac Club is the next best thing! In essence all our collections are a world-wide vac museum run by people who really care about them. And the mini-meets and home visits are like visiting mini-museums all over the world.

Keep up the great work VCCC Vac Fans!
