I walked around Goodwill for a few minutes last night and spotted an older (1960s?) vintage Hoover Convertible. It was a base model (no headlight) in peach and tan, and was in pretty 'peachy' condition, except for the tan vinyl outer bag, which was missing a couple of its snaps and was thus held closed with safety pins. I thought about it for a minute, but the bag and the $20 price tag were enough to inspire me to walk away from it. I might have taken the bait at $10, but not $20. Can't take home every stray I find.

I agree. The fact that the money goes to a good cause makes my purchases at Goodwill and other charitable thrifts doubly satisfying, but I still have to keep in perspective whether the thing I am considering purchasing is a good value. In the case of this Hoover, I had to consider the cost of replacing the outer bag, especially considering I already have too many vacuums, If I could even find one, it could easily turn that $20 vacuum into a $40 or $50 vacuum.
