i HAVE AN OLD OCEDER SPONGE MOP ITS 25 YRS OLD HOW DO YOU KEEP THE SPONGES FROM STINKING AND GETTING HARD AS A ROCK I HAVE A CASE OF REPLASEMENT SPONGES I GOT ON EBAY BUT SEEMS WASTEFULL TO CHANGE ALL THE TIME I KNOW WASHING THEM ROTS THEM AS DOES BLEACH. I HAVE A NEW STRING MOP I KNOW YOU CAN BLEACH THEM. I HAVE EVEN PUT IT OUTSIDE TO AIR OUT IT STILL SOMETIMES STINKLS WHEN YOU WET IT.

Bacteria is what makes it stink. If there is no metal on the sponge - mine have a plastic mount to the squeeze base - microwaving a wet sponge for a minute will kill the bacteria. If there is metal on the mount, a shallow pan and a soak in boiling water will do the same thing. All synthetic sponges will get rock hard when dry, it's just the way things are.
