I asked earlier about vintage hoover constellations but something must not have gone through. so i am thinking about getting a new oldie. i have been recently interested in a constellation i have a budget of 20-60 dollars to spend on such a buy and am interested in 60s through 80s models what does everyone recommend

john is right they are fantastic straight suction canisters. one of the best. simple easy to maintain and use. i own 5. two penncrest and 3 hoover badged. far as aquiring them AVOID EBAY. they are way overpriced and 95% of the time, missing important things like the hose, tools or telescoping wands. either that or they have bojack hoses, torn hoses and mis matched tools for that specific model.

rare models include the 434 (white and canton red) green and seal griege 858 tilted connie, model 87 with electric hose (in jade green, same as model 67 convertible), penncrest A108 and penncrest A107 badged constellations, and the model 88 in fawn.

unfortantely, the tools colors dont always coincide with the cleaner, so asking more versed collectors such as myself, john long, fred stacknik or tom gasko to verify what attachment colors should go with a certain model.

far as finding a connie, your best bet is estate sales, thrift stores, flea markets, antique stores and other collectors here. ill keep an eye out for one. if i come across it and its one i already have, ill put you at the top of the list for one.

also they take j bags. get vintage ones. the new ones from hoover.com are not made as well and leak badly. vintage j bags will be light green in color and come in a pack of 4.

hoover connies are the best!

You will not be disappointed with a vintage connie if you follow a few guidelines in acquiring one. The gentleman who posted the previous link was right on the money with his great advice. The ebay sellers appear to be dillusional in their prices for most of the hoovers they have on there.I bought a model 84(from 1956) with all the original attachments recently from a really nice gentleman. I posted a request in the shoppers forum and got a reply within a few days. Good luck! Bill

thanks guys

I will be checking those and here for one or two lol. And what are some problems to look for on these I'm not to used to canisters as I only have uprights

except for cosmetic, (broken top handle, rusty bag latch, split ultraflex hose) every single connie i have had has been plug and play. have never had one that needed service. one thing i like about canisters, the motors tend to last MUCH long in heavy service without major servicing needed.

it why i use canister with powerheads more often now. hoover, kenmore, lux, eureka are all long lasting canisters if made before about 1984. except hoover and lux, most other manufacturers use off the shelf two stage lambs motors and they last forever and parts are still very widely available for the, lux also provides many parts. the old hoover canisters, aside from carbons, its rare anything goes wrong on them. bearings rarely have to lubricated compared to the dirty air uprights like convertibles.

I wanted one of these, there was one on eBay a few days ago that I bunged £40 on. I didn't win it.

I wasn't sure of the values, I just thought it worth a punt at £40.

What is a nice one worth in the UK?

So I found a Constellation down in Essex a chap had advertised. £32 inc delivery with various tools, bags etc with it. It looks quite straight from the photos and runs. Doesn't seem a lot of money to tinker with a golden oldie.
