I was a Cade...

When I was about Cade's age, I was fascinated with our pink and gray Lewyt canister. It was the first 'big' machine I could exert control over. I could configure it with the various wands and attachments, open it up and change out the bag, and even run it. It made me feel very capable. I was envious of our neighbors' Electrolux 1205 with its power nozzle. The neighbors weren't too happy with me messing with it, though. Now, I own two of them, plus various other Electrolux models. I was very excited when we got a green and tan Hoover Convertible when I was in second grade, but the name made no sense to me since you couldn't put the top down.

Gosh. I really wonder how different my childhood would have been had I had one or two “vac buddies” with whom I could have been friends and share my interest. So amazing to learn how many of us loved vacuums when we were little boys….yet we all felt pretty much alone on the world and many of us were shamed by family for our unique hobby.

I am a Cade!

Quite literally, that's my name...

I'm another one who has had this hobby since I was very young, pretty much since I could walk. The first vacuum I remember being fascinated by is my great-grandmother's TriStar DXL. Yes, I said IS...she's 93 now, I'm 16, and she still uses it. Thankfully no one in my family has really ever "shamed" me for my hobby, though my dad is always less than enthused when I bring home a new vacuum. They usually call me for advice when they need to buy a new vacuum, then they do the opposite of what I told them. Two years later, they call me again...

I've been blessed to have met many hundreds of kids who like vacuums. Their parents still bring them to see the vacuum museum. Just last month a couple drove their 9 year old boy from Alabama to Missouri to spend the day with me. I actually think the parents got more out of it than their kid. Their son's favorite vacuum is a Henry. The family sent me this cute toy Henry to display with my other toy vacuums. I hope I have influenced most of those kids to continue with their fascination of old sweepers.
