Sofa in a sack aka Bolster in a bag

Years ago I thought I saw a demo (Electrolux?) where the sales guy put a sofa cushion in a plastic bag and sucked all the air out until it was flat. The thought being that all the dust would be pulled out of the cushion. Anybody know if this really works?

I doubt it. You need some airflow to get the dust moving into the vacuum. All that did was smash the dust flat in the cushion.

They do in Rainbow demos. It's supposed to demo the power of the machine. Guy was not happy when I did the same thing with my Kirby.

I have seen Filter Queen demos doing the cushion test,too.

I think it is a demonstration of suction, not an effective means to clean anything.

It's call the Cushion Crush. In theory, the plastic bag will contact the surface of the cushion, and all the air inside the cushion is finally forced out (along with the dust). I say "in theory" because I've never seen the water get dirty during a demonstration of the Cushion Crush. But it is an impressive demo, that can be done with any hose type vacuum cleaner.

From when I went to a Filter Queen training session-it was a method to pull odors out of the cushions rather than pulling dust from them.You had to do this several times to get the odor out from the cushion-and in the FQ thing you moved the hose to the blower port on the vacuum to reinflate the bag and push fresh air into the cushion.You did this with the machines dirt bin emptied and a fresh filter cone and HEPA cone.

and the opposite-

I have also heard of a 60s Airway salesman placing a bag on the floor under the customers chair and then connecting hose from the blower lifting both the chair and customer.Again to bring attention to the power of the vac with nothing any cleaner.As above when you pull 'old' air out of a cushion it will reinflate with 'fresh' air.

Anybody remember the sales display that you could guess your weight with a HOOVER? The suction or something lifted a chair with the  customer on it! Had to of been in the 1940s or 1950s,I know I've seen a picture of it before!

Then this could lead over to the Kirby test of a Kirby lifting a Volkswagan filled with steel ball bearings-over other vacs picking up boweling balls!
